Jones, Mary Ann Hill Mary Ann (Mrs. Evan D.) Jones
The death of Mrs. Evan D. Jones, which occurred at the family home in Strong City last Friday, brings sadness to the hearts of her many friends in Chase County. Mrs. Jones had been in poor health for several weeks, and had been taken to a hospital in the hopes of getting relief, but the best of medical attention and loving care were of no avail, and the good lady, whose friends are numbered by the score, passed away Friday morning. All the members of the family were present at the time of her death, and while death was not unexpected, it comes as a severe shock to the family.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church Monday afternoon at two thirty, conducted by Mrs. Lasher, and interment was made in the Prairie Grove Cemetery. Members of the Eastern Star met at the family home and led the procession to the church and also were present at the grave. An obituary of Mrs. Jones will appear in next weeks paper.

Mary A. Hill was born in Neath Parish, Glamorganshire, South Wales, March 14, 1851, and died at Strong City, Kansas, September 19, 1913. She was united in marriage to Evan D. Jones at Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, March 27, 1869. To this union nine children were born, six girls and three boys, two girls died in infancy.
The year following her marriage Mrs. Jones with her husband came to the United States and settled at Allegany City, Penn., and in 1873, moved to Youngstown, Ohio. In 1875 the family returned to South Wales, again crossing the sea and returning to the United States in 1881, locating in Emporia, Kansas. Coming to Strong City, Kansas in 1883, a resident of Chase County for 30 years.
In that time Mrs. Jones has endeared herself to all who knew her. She joined the Congregational Church at her old home in South Wales at the age of 16. and shortly after locating in Strong City she united with the Congregational Church here, and has ever been a devoted and faithful member. The dear home church was near to her heart. The writer has worked side by side with her for many years, in all the work of the church she was faithful to her duty, and did "with her might what her hands found to do."
In January last her health began to fail and although everything possible was done for her, it soon became evident that her work on earth was nearly done. The tender ties of home and loved ones were a strong incentive to a brave struggle for life; but it was not to be. The master called. We do not know God's plan or purposes, but "sometime will understand."
Besides a devoted husband, Mrs. Jones has left four daughters, three sons and three grandchildren. They are Mrs. Lucy A. Nethercutt of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Mary E. Gill, Mrs. Bertha G. Palmer, Mrs. Gladys V. Sheets, David J., William J., and Arthur S. Jones all of Strong City. The grandchildren are Miss Marie Nethercutt, Alford Nethercutt and Robert O. Palmer.
The funeral services were held Monday, September 22 at 2:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church and was largely attended. Mrs. Lasher, pastor, officiated assisted by Rev. Gilmore of the Presbyterian Church of Cottonwood Falls. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. Interment was made at Prairie Grove Cemetery. The Eastern Star, of which Mrs. Jones was a member, conducted their beautiful and impressing ceremony at the grave. The pallbearers were S. D. Roberts, W. P. Rettiger, Harmon
Doolittle, A. W. Ryan, E. D. Wilson and C. E. Myers. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community."
