Laughridge, Whitt Everett

Whitt E. Laughridge, 89, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at Morris County Hospital in Council Grove.

Whitt Everett Laughridge, the son of William and Floy Byram Laughridge, was born June 1 1916, at Clements. He graduated from Cedar Point High School and spent his early years on the family farm. The family moved to Strong City in 1935.

He married Betty Jane Rider on June 16, 1940, at Cottonwood Falls. She died on Nov 10, 2004.

He was employed by the Short Motor Company in Cottonwood Falls for seven years and then served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during WWII.

He and Betty purchased the Conner Insurance Agency in 1946 and also entered the real estate business. He owned and operated the Laughridge Realty as a Licensed Insurance Agent and a Real Estate Broker.

Whitt served Chase County in many ways including Cottonwood Falls City Council Member, member of the Board of Education, President of the Chase County Medical Facilities Board, Member of the Chase County Development„ Cork member of the Bicentennial Committee and Pride Committee, President of the Chase County Historical Society since 1983 and the Chase County Chamber of Commerce.

He received the Liberty Bell award in 1990 and in 1991. He was awarded many honors for his years of community service. He was a member and an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church (USA) in Cottonwood Falls and active in the Mariners Club. He was a 50-year member of the Zeredatha Masonic Lodge #80 A.F. & AM.

He is survived by two sons, Charles "Charley" Edward Laughridge of Council Grove and William "Bill" Laughridge of Fremont, Neb.; two daughters, Kay Ellen Olson of Manhattan, Kan. and Connie Sue Donatelli of Derby; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lemuel Laughridge; and two sisters, Jean Maybell and Vivian Dawson.

Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church (USA) in Cottonwood Falls with The Rev. Pat Ireland officiating. A Masonic Service, con-ducted by the Zeredatha Lodge #80 A.F. & A.M., and a Military Graveside Service, conducted by a Fort Riley Honor Guard, was held at Prairie Grove Cemetery in rural Cottonwood Falls.

Memorial contributions to the Chase County Historical Society and First Presbyterian Church (USA) of Cottonwood Falls may be sent in care of the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845.
