Madden, John Sr. JOHN MADDEN, SR., FORMER CHASE COUNTY ATTORNEY PASSES AT WICHITA
John Madden, Sr. 89, senior member of the Wichita Bar Association died Monday, at ? p.m, following a long illness.
Mr. Madden, who was admitted to the Kansas Bar more than sixty years ago, had been in active law practice until he was stricken with a bronchial congestion last December 27. His death was attributed to the bronchial complications.
Born in Muncie, Indiana, Feb. 1856, he moved with his parents to Florence, Kansas in 1866. He grew up with the country, going through several Indian scares. One of his favorite pastimes was telling stories of his youth pioneering in the Flint Hills. Mr. Madden was recognized as an authority on Indian lore in Kansas and of the development of the state.
Mr. Madden served as superintendent of schools of Marion county, county attorney of Chase County, member of the state board of regents and member of the state text book commission.
For a number of years, he was general attorney for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad at Persons. Leaving the railroad, Mr. Madden came to Wichita more than thirty years ago. For many years he has been associated with his son-in-laws business under the firm name of Madden and Madden. The Madden house is at 227 South Estelle.
Survivors include John Madden, Jr, a son and two daughter, Mrs. Roy F Bailey, Salina, and Mrs. Nana M. Cooper, San Diego, California and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
