Madden, Mary E Ellsworth Mrs. Mary E. Madden, wife of Judge John Madden, of Wichita, died at her home last Wednesday evening, April 21st, following a brief illness.

The Maddens moved to Cottonwood Falls in the early eighties, where Mr. Madden with his brother, Judge Dennis Maddenpracticed law. From this city they moved to Emporia and later to Parsons, and still later to Wichita which remained their home.
Mrs. Madden was 66 years of age and was reared on the frontiers of the Middle West. They came to Kansas in 1871.
Her father, Col. Henry E. Ellsworth, was owner of all the eating houses on the Union Pacific, before it was taken over by the present system, and as a young woman she watched the spikes driven as the railroad was pushed westward through the prairies.
The onslaughts of the Indians, the hardships of life with the construction gangs and the pioneer life were all interwoven into her childhood. At one time, Sioux attacked the roundhouse at Sidney, Neb. where she, with other women and children, had sought shelter. The men defended the building and there was loss of life.
After her childhood spent with her father at points from Ogden to Omaha where his eating houses were located, she accompanied him to Kansas, where he was manager of eating houses of the Santa Fe before they were taken over by Fred Harvey. She attended the public schools at Florence and it was there she met John Madden, afterwards to become her husband. The parents ofMrs. Madden had taken land in Marion county in 1861, and her father was owner of a homestead there.
In 1878, Mr. Madden was elected superintendent of schools of Marion county. They were married in 1879, at Kansas City, Mo., and went to Marion to make their home. Mr. Madden was admitted to the bar in October, 1879, and at the expiration of his term as county superintendent, moved to Cottonwood Falls to practice law. While here, he was appointed one of the regents of the Kansas State Normal at Emporia, and realizing the need of educating their children, the family moved to Emporia.
Mr. Madden was then appointed attorney for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad and was located at Parsons. From Parsons, Mr. and Mrs. Madden went to Wichita about 10 years ago.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Madden is survived by one son, John Madden, Jr., now associated in law here with Judge Madden; three daughters, Mrs. H. G. Whittesey, Mexico City, Mexico; Mrs. Roy F. Bailey, Salina, and Mrs. C. F. Cooper, Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Dr. Anna Ellsworth, Wichita, and one brother, D. A. Ellsworth of San Diego, Cal.
