Martin, Charles "Walt" Former area resident Charles "Walt" Martin, 78, of Wellington died April 22,2002, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington. Mr. Martin was a grain inspector for the Kansas State Grain Inspection Department from 1956 until 1959, when he was appointed inspector in charge of the grain inspection office at Wellington. He also worked the family farm, until he moved to Salina in 1956. He retired Nov. 17 1986.
Charles Martin, the son of George William and Mary Jane Garner Martin, was born Nov. 23, 1923, on a farm near Saffordville in Chase County. He attended Toledo Grade School and graduated from Toledo Township High School in 1941. He joined the U S Navy on Jan 27,1945, and took his basic training at the Great Lakes Navy Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill. He was honorably discharged for medical reasons as a seaman second class on July 13, 1945. Mr. Martin was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Tom Schwinn Post 90 both in Wellington. He was a Boy Scout leader for several years and coached Little League baseball.
He is survived by his wife the former Joan Carter. They married on Dec. 28, 1944, in Emporia. Also surviving are two sons, Larry Martin of Kirtland, NM., and Lloyd Martin of San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Lila Tompkins of Emporia; and three grandchildren. Four brothers and six sisters died earlier. The funeral was April 25, 2002 in the First United Methodist Church. Burial with full military honors, was in Prairie Lawn Cemetery at Wellington.
