Martin, Will Will Martin Gone.
Will J. Martin was born in Kansas City, Oct. 25, 1871, died in Strong City at the home of his sister, Mrs. Virgil Brown, Sept. 4, 1908 He came to Strong City with his parents in 1878 and lived most of his life there. He was educated in the public schools and was early a member of St. Anthony's church.
He went to work in the Santa Fe depot at the age of 15 years and remained in their service until his illness forced him to resign last April. Five years ago he took a position in the depot at Florence, Kansas, and had been agent there for the past three years.
Will was a bright, jolly, good natured fellow and was liked by all who knew him. He was quite an actor as an Irish comedian and while living there always took an active part in the home talent plays and entertainments given. He was greatly missed by the community when he moved to Florence, but we saw him occasionally then. Now he has gone from our midst forever and sad indeed are many, many hearts over his early and painful death.
His illness began about a year ago. While lifting he met with an accident from which his sickness developed. He came to Strong at the time and spent a few weeks, also went to Kansas City and Topeka and consulted physicians, and after a few weeks rest went back to his work, but April 18th, this year, he had to give up and come to his sister's home where everything that love and kindness and doctors could do was done for him, but nothing could save him. The dreaded disease, cancer,, bad commenced its work and nothing could stop it until it took the life itself. The relatives have the sympathy of the en-tire community in their great loss.
He was a member of Council No. 946 Knights of Columbus at Florence, the Modern Woodmen lodge of Strong City, and held a policy in the New York Life Insurance company.
High mass 'was held for him Sunday morning at the church and. be was buried from St., Anthony's church at 8 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The Rev. Father Verdan gave a tine tribute 'to his memory in his sermon. The members of Florence Council, Knights of Columbus, attended his funeral in a body, and many friends from Kansas City, Emporia and surrounding country came to pay their last respects to the departed. He was buried in the Catholic cemetery north of Strong, and many sorrowing friends and relatives followed the body ,to its last resting place.
All through his terrible suffering he was as patient and uncomplaining and his main idea always was to cause as little work and trouble as possible. He enjoyed very much the visits of his friends and appreciated their kindness of the fullest degree.
