Maxey, Frank M

OBITUARY OF FRANK MAXEY WHO DIED IN COLORADO

Mrs. Harry Maxey, of the National Hotel, returned home last Saturday from Colorado and Cherokee, Kansas where she was called last week by a telegram telling of the sudden death of her son, Frank M Maxey, at Lasalle, Colorado.

Frank Maxey, who spent several months in the Falls a couple of years ago, was in the employment of the Union Pacific Railway Company at the time of his death and was a brakeman with a run between Sterling and Lasalle, Colorado. His death occurred on Friday, January 26, 1917.

As near as Mrs Maxey is able to learn of the particulars concerning his death from members of his train crew, he died from heart trouble, death coming almost instantly. The conductor on the train on which Frank was brakeman, told Mrs. Maxey that the train crew had eaten dinner, before starting on their run that day and that Frank was apparently in the best of health and spirits. In fact he was the life of the group of trainmen who sat at the table, the conductor said. After starting on the run, he got off at a little station to throw a switch and after completing this work and letting the train pass and throwing back the switch again made a run to catch his train which he did with apparent ease.

He and the conductor remained in the caboose for some time after which the conductor went forward. At the next station where Frank should have given the eningeer a signal, he failed to do so and the conductor gave the signal in his place and then went back to the caboose to see what was wrong. He found Frank lying on the floor of the car, dead. He had evidently fell from a low chair on which he had been sitting when the conductor left him a few minutes before.

The body was viewed by the county coroner who pronounced death due to neuralgia of the heart, and then the remains were held until Mrs. Maxey's arrival. She accompanied the body to Topeka and from there to Cherokee, Kansas, the old family home of the Maxey's where interment was made in Pleasant View Cemetery. On account of his infirmities, Mr. Maxey, of Topeka, was unable to go to Colorado with his wife, but went as far as Kansas City.

Frank Maxey was born on January 20, 1882 at Waco, Missouri, and moved with his parents to Cherokee, Kansas, later. He had been in the railroad business for some time and previous to his work with the Union Pacific had been with the C. B. & Q with headquarters at McCook, Nebraska. He was one of three children born to Mr and Mrs Maxey, all of whom are now dead. The many friends he made while he lived in the Falls a couple of years ago will be grieved to learn of his death and the whole community joins in extending to the bereaved parents their sincere sympathy.
