May, Dexter

Dexter May, Civil War Veteran and personal friend of John Brown, died at his home in Elmdale at 11:20 Sunday evening after an illness of several weeks. Mr May was 85 years of age and had resided in Chase County 54 years, coming here in the year 1871.

He was member of Company A in the 7th Kansas Regiment in which regiment John Brown was a captain. He served throughout the war. With his death there are now but four members of US Grant Post of the G.A.R. left in Elmdale. They are Julius Frey of Elmdale; John Symes of Marion County; A M Breese of this city; former commander of the Soldiers Home at Fort Dodge, and Dr T F Johnson of this city.

Mr. May is survived by his wife and three children who are Oscar May of Middle Creek; Clarence May of Elmdale, and Raymond May of this city.
