McCabe, Abbie Sharp ABBIE SHARP McCABE
Mrs. Abbie McCabe, one of Chase county's oldest and most respected pioneer women, died at her home near Bazaar Friday, October 29, following a long illness. The funeral services were held at the Bazaar church last Sunday. and interment was in the Bazaar cemetery.
Mrs, McCabe was born February 10 1845 in Tennessee where she spent her early girlhood. She was married December 2, 1869 to Patrick B, McCabe and to this union five children were born, three of whom survive, who are Miss Maggie McCabe, Wm. E. McCabe and Lee McCabe, all of Bazaar.
Mrs. McCabe's husband died several years ago and two of their five children are dead. Mrs. McCabe was 80 years of age and had lived in Bazaar township for the past sixty-six and one-half years, of which fifty-seven years had been spent on the
McCabe farm where she died.
A pioneer has passed to her rest and reward.
When one says "A Pioneer." what thoughts came crowding into mind of struggle, hardship, privation, and sacrifice, that marked each step of those brave and noble ones who came
to Kansas in those early days.
RAbbie Sharp McCabe knew what each of those steps meant. Coming to Chase county at the age of fourteen she did her part faithfully and unselfishly in the building of her community and state for sixty-six; years foregoing the few advantaged which were available in her girlhood that she might help her widowed mother care for the younger members of the family and after lending
willing hand to neighbors in time of need.
To aid in the care of a family in those days meant much hard labor for it was necessary to produce as well as prepare material for clothing as well as food.
With the aid of brothers and sisters she raised cotton and also sheep and many yards of cloth both cotton and wool has she woven.
She was still using garden seed,
the parent seed of which was brought from Tennessee, reproducing through more than sixty years of careful tending and selection.
At no time did she take to herself any of the easy ways but to the last bore her full share of the daily burdens of the household.
Her type, the early pioneer woman and mother, "The Builder" we may say, is rapidly passing and we reap where they have sown,
May we, who are enjoying the harvest of their sowing and sacrifice, keep the faith for the future and build in our time as fair and fine as they,--A Friend.
PIONEER WOMAN DIES
Mrs. Abbie McCabe, who has lived in Chase County nearly 67 years, died Friday at her home at Bazaar. Mrs. McCabe was nearly 81 years old, having lived in Bazaar township 67 years, 57 of which were spent on the home farm.
Mrs. McCabe was born in Tennessee in 1845 and came to Chase County in 1860. She was married to Patrick B. McCabe in 1869. To this union were born five children, two of whom are dead. Mr. McCabe also is dead.
She is survived by three children, Miss Maggie McCabe, Lee and W. E. McCabe of Bazaar, and three brothers and two sisters of Oklahoma and one sister of California.
