McCallum, Mary Jane McNiven
WELL KNOWN WOMAN PASSES SUDDENLY
Mrs. Mary J. McCallum, well known Elmdale woman, died suddenly early Friday morning at her home on Middle Creek, northwest of Elmdale. She had not felt well for two days but seemed to be better late Thursday evening when members of her family talked with her. She was found dead at 3 o'clock Friday morning when a son went into Her bedroom to see if she needed anything.
Mrs. McCallum had lived on Middle Creek since her marriage in 1894 to Peter McCallum, prominent farmer and stockman who died in April, 1926. The McCallum family lived first on the farm now owned by D. A. Macalpine and later moved to the present home
further up Middle Creek.
Funeral services attended by a crowd which filled the Elmdale Methodist church, were held Sunday afternoon at 2:3o o'clock. The Rev. Alvin C. Rowe conducted the services. A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Will Schneider, Miss Carol Shelley, and D. A. Macalpine sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me," and "Crossing the Bar." Mrs. A. J. Stewart played the accompaniment. Dvorak's "Goin' Home" was played by Mrs Margaret Macalpine as those in the audience
passed from the church.
Interment was in the Elmdale cemetery.
The pall-bearers were T. R. Wells, Ed Thurston, O. E. Giger, Will Ward, J. A. Holmes, and Paul B. Wood.

Mary Jane McNiven was born August 19, 1871, at Doune, Perthshire, Scotland, the daughter of Janet Ferguson and John B. McNiven and died August 2, 1935, at her home near Elmdale, Kansas, at the age of 63 years, 11 months and 17 days.
She came to America when five years of age with her sister, Mrs. James McNee, and lived in Wisconsin with the McNee family until 1884 when all came to Chase County, locating at Cottonwood Falls. During the 51 years intervening she has made Chase County her home.
On October 10, 1894, she was married to Peter McCallum and they established their home on Middle Creek, broken last week by the death of Mrs. McCallum who followed her husband in death by nine years and four months.
To this union were born nine children, who, with nine grandchildren, survive her. Three sisters who are left to mourn her passing are Mrs. Jessie Kirkland, Mrs Margaret McNiven and Miss Helen McNiven of Redlands, California, and two brothers, Alexander McNiven of St. Thomas,
Canada, and Duncan McNiven Scotland.
She was a member of the Presbyterian church until early in 1900 when she transferred, her membership to the Methodist church of Elmdale. She was also an active member of the Ladies' Aid and the Women's Missionary Society.
She was recognized as a woman of sterling qualities by her lifelong friends and neighbors in the Elmdale Community. and throughout the county. She was ever ready with her kindly helpfulness and gracious manner to serve every worthwhile cause or in the hour of sickness and disress.
But she achieved the goal of her greatest lifework in the rare distinction of motherhood to a large family—a lifework of consecrated and devoted love. The immediate children who grieve at the loss of this dear mother are Donald McCallum, Matfield Green; Mrs. Agnes, Wells, Elmdale; Mrs. Ruth Colmar, St. Louis, Mo.; Rodney McCallum, Eldorado; Keith McCallum, Elmdale; Mrs. Elizabeth Shankland, Cottonwood Falls; George McCallum, Neil McCallum and Janette McCallum, Elmlale.
