McDowell, Joseph G

The funeral of Joseph G McDowell who died in his home in this city, Friday night, was held at his late home Tuesday afternoon, and was attended by a large number of friends who were sincerely grieved by his taking off of his young manhood. Joe has been in such condition of health for the past few years that he was incapacitated for business, but he never lost hope nor ambition and believed strongly in his ultimate recovery until the very end.

Joseph G. McDowell was born at Washington, Ohio, in 1872. He came to Kansas in the early 90's and began clerking in the Dry Good store of Carson & Sanders. After living here several years he went to Eldorado where he had a good position in the same line of work. From Eldorado he went to Larned, Kansas, where he had the management of a dry goods store., It was while he was in business in Larned that he married Miss Eva Tuttle of this city. This popular wedding occurred March 20, 1901.

Shortly after his marriage he came to this city and formed a partnership with C A Cowley in the dry goods and grocery business. From that tie the firm of Cowley & McDowell was one of the leading firms of this city. About four years ago these men sold out to the Martin Dry Goods Co. Since this time Mr. McDowell has been engaged in various businesses handicapped all the time by his failing health.

The funeral was preached by Rev. H C Cass of Alva, Okla., who was a close friend of Mr. McDowell, and interment was nade in Prairie Grove cemetery. Besides his wife and little son, Murray, he leaves a father, J G McDowell, of Washington, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Belle Walters of Maddox, Colo.; an aged grandmother, Mrs. Isabel McDowell, two aunts, Mrs. W W Saunders and Mrs. Robert Clements and two uncles, Mr. C C McDowell of this city and Mr. Will McDowell of Chicago.
