McElfresh, James H
FORMER CHASE COUNTY RESIDENT PASSES AWAY.
The many people of this county Who knew James McElfresh, formerly of this city, and for many years a rural route carrier and teacher of the county, will be sorry to hear of his death which occured at his, present home in Emporia, on Thursday, February 8th following a long illness.
Mr McElfresh's death was due to tuberculosis from which decease he had been a sufferer for a number of years.
The deceased came to Chase county with his parents when still a small boy from their old Missouri home at DeKalb. The family located in the Homestead, neighborhood where Mr, McElfresh's father, engaged in farming and stock-raising for a number of years.
After completing his education, James taught school in various parts of the county for a number of years and afterwards became carrier on the first rural route to be established in this county which was the route out of this city. That was during the time when the Late William Norton was postmaster and was about fifteen years ago.
During the time he was on the route he lived in the southeast part of town in the block which is now owned by S. M. Speer, of near Bazaar. When he resigned as rural route carrier he moved to Emporia with his family, and that city continued to be his home until the time of his death.
Mr. McElfresh leaves a wife and three children, besides his mother and a brother and two sisters to mourn his death. To these is extended the sincere sympathy of the many friends and neighbors who were so well acquainted with the McElfresh family during the years they lived here.
The following concerning the death of Mr. McElfresh was taken from last Thursday's issue of the Emporia Gazette:
James H. McElfresh died at 9:30 o'clock this morning at his home, 15 South West Street, of tuberculosis, after a long sickness.
Mr. McElfresh was born in DeKalb, Mo., November 3, 1875. He was married January 1, 1903, in Chase county to Miss Mildred Stotler, who survives him.
He came to Emporia six years ago, and for several years was traveling salesman for the Central States Publishing Company.
Besides his wife, Mr. McElfresh is survived by three children, Harold, Lee and Robert; his mother, Mrs. A. Barnard, of Mountain Grove, Mo., two sisters, Mrs. Holland Jones, St. Joe, and Mrs. Blanche Cates, of Sand Springs,. Oklahoma, one brother, Wid McElfresh, of Joplin, Mo.
Mr. McElfresh was a member of the Independence Avenue Methodist Church, of Kansas City, and of the Emporia Council No. 20, Knights & Ladies of. Security. Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning at the Grace Methodist Church, and the body will be taken to Olpe for interment.
