McNee, James

Death of James McNee. Mr. James McNeil, who departed this life last Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, after an illness of 18 weeks, was an old and highly esteemed citizen of this county. His life in the community was prominent in business integrity, honest intercourse with neighbors and friends, and constant effort for public good.

A man whose influence was constantly thrown for kindness and helpfulness to every man or woman who was deserving of sympathy. He had been raised in the strict tenets of the Scotch Presbyterian church, and in all his after life affiliated with it. He has been a member of the Presbyterian church in this city almost since its organization, and his death will be felt a great loss by that body

James McNee was born at Perthshire, Scotland, Nov. 22, 1828, and was 66 years, 5 months and 28 days old when he died. He came to America in 1848, at the age of 19, crossed the plains to California in 1850, remaining two years, after which he went back to Scotland.

After spending three years in his native country he again returned to America, in 1856, and located in Wisconsin. He was married that year to Jane McNevin by whom he had three sons—Peter, Duncan and William. Peter and William are now living, the former in Wisconsin and the latter in this city. Mrs. Jane McNee died May 21, 1878.

He was married the second time to Agnes G. McNevin, who bore him six children, four of whom, John, George, Jeannette and James are living.

Mr. McNee located in this city in January 1884, and filled the office of school district treasurer. The city schools were closed Wednesday morning, as a mark of respect, and teachers and pupils attended the funeral services.

Funeral services were held at the late residence of the deceased, conducted by Rev. J. A. Sankey, of the Presbyterian church. A large concourse of people attended the services and followed the body to the depot.

The body was shipped to Janesville, Wisconsin, on the 11:30 train yesterday morning and will be buried at Johnstown Center, near Janesville. The widow and three children, William, John and George, accompanied the body to its last resting place.
