McReynolds, Leonard Augustus

Obituary---McReynolds

L. A. McReynolds was born in Poseyville, Indiana, Apr 14 1841 and died in Kit Carson, Colorado, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, December 10, 1924, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Westphal.

Soon after his birth his parents moved to McLean County, Illinois, where he was left an orphan at the age of 9 years. He then lived with realtives. Among his schoolmates and boyhood acquaintances were (in later life) Governor Joseph Pifer, Capt. John McNults and Adlae E. Stevenson.

At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in Company B, 19th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, proceeding to Benton Barracks, St. Louis, then to Springfield, Mo.

In December 1862, at the battle of Prairie Grove, Ark., he received a gun shot wound in the leg. Upon the re-organization of his regiment he took part in the Mississippi River campaign before Vicksburg, the Battle of Mobile Bay and Pensacola, Fla.

After receiving his discharge at Rock Island, Illinois he was married to Sara Jane McReynolds at Bloomington. To this union was born three children, Mrs Alcyona Baldwin Westphal, Oliver McReynolds, and Clara Wonderly.

The next five years he was employed as bridge builder on the Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western railroad, the Big 4 system. From 1870-1900 he was the builder of many grain elevators and mills in central Illinois, but on the coming of the Rock Island and Union Pacific railroads he spent the years 1887-88 at Colby, Kansas. From 1900-1910 he followed the lighter occupation of building dwelling houses in Topeka, Kansas.

In 1911 he came to Kit Carson, Colorado and homesteaded 8 miles south of town where he lived until the death of his wife, Apr 5 1914. He then lived at the home of his son.

He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. As a young man he held various local offices, such as township collector of taxes, president of town council, member of school board and justice of the peace.

The funeral services at Kit Carson were conducted by Rev. J H Payton at 2:30 Thursday and he was laid to rest by the side of his wife in Mt. Auburn cemetery, Topeka, Kansas, Saturday afternoon.

"No matter how long the river, the river will reach the sea."
