Merritt, Thomas J

DEATH OF THOMAS J. MERRITT

Thomas J. Merritt died at his home in Elmdale last Sunday following a long illness. Mr. Merritt had been in failing health for the past two years. Some time ago he suffered from a heart stroke and he had suffered from heart trouble for several years.

The funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Elmdale at 10:00 o'clock Tuesday morning, March 6th, Rev. R. M. Salts, pastor of the Christian Church of Marion, preaching the sermon. Interment was in Prairie Grove cemetery west of this city.

Mr. Merritt was born in Boyd county, Kentucky, March 4th, 1851. He was the son of John and Jane Merritt.

On April 25th, 1872, he was married to Miss Emma C. Ratliffin in Wayne county, West Virginia. To this union ten children were born of whom eight are still living. The Merritt family came to Kansas in July of 1898 and lived here until 1906, when they moved to Wilson county. They returned to this county in 1923, and this then remained their home.

The children who are living are D. Merritt of Sands Springs, Oklahoma; Mrs. Frances Beck, of Elmdale; Frank Merritt, of Sturgis, Mississippi; Mrs, Dippie Noel and Edgar Merritt, of Elmdale; Mrs. Jennie Burbaker of Coffeyville, Kansas; Mrs. Myrtle Turnipseed, of Fresno, California.
R There are also twenty-one grandchildren and seven great grandchildren living, besides three brothers and three sisters, Mrs. Martha Kelley, of Louisa, Ky; Mrs. Dollie Rice, of West Virginia; Mrs. Minta Buffington of this city; Marion Merritt, of West Virginia, ____ Hill, this county, and Charlie Merritt of Bubert, Colorado.

At the time of his death the deceased lacked just a day of being 78 years of age.
