Miller, Lucinda Ford Mrs. Sylvester Miller of Strong City died in the hospital at Halstead, Frlday morning following an operation for gall stones. Mrs. Miller had been ailing for some months.
In the passing of Mrs. Miller, Chase county looses another old settler, the Millers having lived here for more than forty years, The greater part of this time they have resided in Strong City where she was familiarly known as "Ma Miller."
Lucinda Ford, the daughter of Henry and Matilda Ford, was born at Iowa City, Iowa, February 21, 1857. She was united in marriage to Sylvester Miller of North Liberty, Iowa, March 27, 1869. To this union were born four children. In February 1877, they moved to Neosho county, Kansas, where they resided six years, removing to Washington county, Kansas, in August, 1888, and to Chase county in 1886.
In her young womanhood she united with the Presbyterian church of which she remained a faithful member until death. She was a pioneer in the true sense of the word. Coming west in a day when Kansas prairies were little more than a trackless wilderness, but through all the trials and privations of pioneer life she proved herself a true woman, dispensing kindness and good cheer to all with whom she came in contact.
Old and young came to her for comfort and advice, and her kindness
and hospitality, her quaint humor
and terse sayings, have helped to
dispel the, gloom from many a discouraged heart and life. She was a
true Christian, a kind and loving
wife, and mother.
RShe departed this
life at the Halstead Hospital Halstead, Kansas, at 4:20 A, M. August
27, 1926, aged 69 years. 6 months and 6 days.
Besides her husband she is survived by one son, John S Miller of Abilene and three daughters, Mrs, Viola Hanlin, Texhoma, Okla.; Mrs. Clara Kerr, Coal City, Illinois; Mrs. Edna Garrison, Manchester, Kansas; also ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Miller was a Charter member of Xabitha Rebekah Lodge, No. 312, having been a member for more than thirty years and Chaplin of the Order for eighteen years. She was a faithful member and will be sadly missed by all.
Rev. Bennett conducted the funeral services Sunday afternoon from the family home in Strong City. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends were present. Interment was made in Prairie Grove cemetery at Cottonwood Falls.
She is not 'dead but only promoted,
She has entered the kingdom above.
And there 'neath the smile of the
Savior,
She will finish her labors of love.
