Mitchell, James Irwin DEATH OF
JAMES I. MITCHELL
The numerous friends and farmer neighbors of James I. Mitchell will be grieved to learn of his death which occurred at his home in Americus, Kansas, January 22nd, following a long illness.
The funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the United Presbyterian church in Americus, with the Rev. J. M. Wallace, pastor, conducting the services. Interment was made in Memorial Lawn cemetery in Emporia.
The Mitchell family lived in the north part of this county near Hymer for about twenty-five years, coming here in 1893 where Mr. Mitchell operated a big farm until 1919 when the family moved to Americus which has since been their home.

James Irwin Mitchell was born in Logan, Co., Ohio, October 4, 1856, and departed this life at his home in Americus, Kansas, January 22, 1936, at the age of 79 years, 3 months, and 18 days.
Mr. Mitchell was the son of William R. and Nancy Mitchell of Northwood, Ohio. Here he attended school and college, later moving to Bellefontaine, Ohio. In February 1884, he came to Kansas locating on a farm in Morris county. In 1893, he purchased a farm in Chase county, which was his home for 25 years.
In September, 1885, he was married to Sarah Ellen Smith of Morris county. To this union three children were born, Mrs. Amy Hudson, Harry C. Mitchell, who was killed by lightning in July, 1916, and Mrs. Ethel Sterbenz.
Mr. Mitchell moved to Americus in December, 1919, which has since been his home. He was mayor there for two terms, He has been in poor health for more than two years, having been confined to his home since April, 1935. His patience and thoughtfulness of others during his long months of suffering are characteristic of his life.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church in Ohio. Upon moving to Americus, he joined the United Presbyterian church where he has served as an elder since Dec. 12, 1926.
Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell had their Golden Wedding anniversary Sept. 29, 1935. An "Open House" had been planned, but Mr. Mitchell's health would not permit.
Mr. Mitchell leaves to mourn his loss, his widow; two daughters, Mrs. W. T. Hudson, and Mrs. S. A. Sterbenz of Americus; one sister, Mrs. H. F. Pickett, of Americus, one brother, S. O. Mitchell of Los Angeles, California; and three grandchildren, Maxine and Pauline Hudson, and Clifford Mitchell.
