Monroe, George Washington George Washington Monroe - November 17, 1919. Just as we are going to press, word comes from St. Mary's Hospital in Emporia, Kansas that Mr. Monroe had died from the wounds received. The body will be brought to Cottonwood Falls Tuesday and funeral arrangements will be announced later.
City Marshall, George Monroe, is lying at the point of death at St. Mary's hospital in Emporia today as the result of a motor car accident yesterday morning. It seems that Mr. Monroe left this city about 9:30 Sunday morning to walk to Prairie Grove Cemetery to visit the grave of his wife, which was frequently his habit.
When near the cemetery, he was overtaken by a motor car and about the same time stepped out to one side of the road to let another car which was coming from the west pass. Just behind this later car was another car, a high-powered motor driven by Howard Dunlap, banker of Emporia and at the time Mr. Monroe stepped to one side to let the car in front of the Dunlap car pass, the Dunlap car turned to the same side of the road and attempted to pass the car ahead of it.
Without warning, Mr. Monroe was struck squarely by the bumper on the Dunlap car and carried a distance of probably fifty feet on the bumper before the occupants of the car could stop when they realized what had happened. Mr. Monroe had his right hip crushed by the impact and his right arm was broken in two places near the shoulder and at the wrist. In addition to these injuries, his face and head were severely bruised and he is believed to have sustained internal injuries.
The injured man was immediately brought to this city by George Gillaspie and several other men of this place who were driving just behind the Dunlap car, and given medical aid by Drs. Woodhull and Titus. When picked up, Mr. Monroe was conscious but he lost consciousness soon after being brought to town.
Sunday afternoon he was taken to St. Mary's hospital in Emporia where he is receiving all the care and attention that the best medical skill and nursing can give. Because of the fact tht Mr. Monroe some years ago underwent an operation which had left him not physical strong, and this coupled with the fact that he is now in his fifty-sixth year, makes such injuries very serious and the physicans who are caring for him are unable to give much hope as to a favorable outcome.
Mr Dunlap and his party were greatly grieved over the accident and were unable to see Mr. Monroe until it was to late to stop when they attempted to pass the motor car ahead of them at the time he stepped out to the same side of the road. After waiting here to see that Mr. Monroe was made as comfortable as possible at his home and was given medical aid, Mr. Dunlap went onto Emporia, but returned to this city again in the afternoon to see how Mr. Monroe's condition was. Sunday afternoon when Mr. Monroe was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, he was accompnaied by his sons, William and Charles.
