Mounkes, Darrel G

Darrel G Mounkes, 87 of Great Bend died Oct. 2, 2001, at the Central Kansas Medical Center - St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. Mr. Mounkes was a retired teacher and principal who taught for 33 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He moved from Herington to Great Bend 34 years ago.

Darrel G. Mounkes, the son of Walter and Mary Sattler Mounkes, was born March 31, 1914, in Lyon County. He graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor's degree and from Colorado State University with a master's degree.

He married Marjorie E. Moreland on Jan. 5, 1943, in California. She died May 23, 1973. He married Norma G Gutierrez on Dec. 27, 1977, at Great Bend.

Mr. Mounkes was a member of the Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife; a son, Maj. Jay Mounkes of Travis Air Force Base, Calif; a daughter, Sallee J Dixson of Stillwater, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Gloria Schamber of Hays; a stepson, Larry R. Marquez of Aptos, Calif.; and brother, Clarence Mounkes, of Emporia; three sisters, Frances Thompson of Cottonwood Falls, Eleanor Greene of Las Vegas, and Darlene K. Bloom of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. Three brothers, John Mounkes, J. Owen Mounkes and Floyd P. Mounkes, died earlier.

The funeral was Saturday in St. Marks Lutheran Church at Great Bend. The graveside service, with full military honors, was Saturday in Bushrong Cemetery at Bushong. Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Foundation may be sent to Bryant-Christians Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend, KS, 67530.
