Obley, William M Former Emporian William M. Obley, 81, of Junction City died May 13, 2002, at Geary Community Hospital in Junction City. Mr. Obley served with the U S Army until he retired in 1964, after which he taught school at Fort Riley Junior High School for two years. He also was a civilian employee in the Fort Riley Information Office and edited the Post's newspaper for 17 years. He joined Company B, 137th Infantry Reigment of the Kansas National Guard in 1937 and was called to active duty in 1940 before World War II. He received his commission from Fort Benning's Infantry Officer Candidate School in July 1942. During World War II, he served with the 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 17th Airborne Division in the European Theater. He earned three campaign stars and the Bronze Star and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge in January 1945. During the Korean War, he served with the 187th Regimental Airborne Combat Team in Korea in 1951 through 1953.
William M. Obley, the son of William C. and Vera McClelland Obley, was born June 7, 1920 at Saffordville. He graduated from Emporia High School in 1938 and completed bachelor's and master's degrees at Emporia State University.
He married Nadine Patterson of Junction City on Jan. 8, 1943, at Fort Riley. She survives. Mr. Obley was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He also was a member of American Legion Post 5 of Emporia and a 60 year plus member of Emporia Masonic Lodge 12 of Emporia and a 56 year plus member of the Topeka Consistory of the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Geary County Historical Society and served on the board of directors; president of the Kiwanis Club in 1967; and a member of the Retired Officers Associaton.
Additional survivors are a son, William W. Obley of Camas, Wash; a daughter, Nancy Kilborn of Rancho Murieta, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A brother died earlier. The funeral was May 17, 2002 in the First United Methodist Church in Junction City. Members of Company B were honorary casket bearers. Burial, with full military honors was in Fort Riley Cemetery.
