Owen, Alta Ethel Harness Alta Ethel Owen, 101, died
March 22, 2003, at the
Presbyterian Manor in
Emporia.
Alta Ethel Harness, the
daughter of John Franklin and
Nellie May Wimmer Harness,
was born Feb. 27, 1902, in St.
John. She married Theodore
Chauncey Owen on Aug. 18,
1926, at St. John. He preceded
her in death on Aug. 23, 1992.
Mrs. Owen graduated from
Antrim Rural High School
May 20, 1920. She then
attended Ottawa University's
School of Music and graduated
in 1924.
Alta was a retired music
teacher. She began her music
teaching career in Lenora and
taught there from 1924 to
1926. After moving to Emporia
in 1926, she then taught at
several schools throughout
Lyon and Chase counties,
including Miller, Neosho
Rapids, Hartford, Reading,
Elmdale and Cottonwood
Falls. She retired from teaching in the spring of 1967.
She is a member of the First
Congregational Church in
Emporia.
Mrs. Owen has held several
leadership positions. She was
president of the Women's
Fellowship-First
Congregational Church and
the Review Club from 1936-
1938. She organized the
Emporia Music Club and the
Children's Music Club with
Mrs. Gretchen Dalley. She was
the president of the Newman
Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
from 1972-1975 and the KSTC
Faculty Women from 1968-
1970. She was the District
Chairman of the Federated
Women's Club, Music
Activities in 1971. She was
also president of the Delta
Kappa Gamma, Honorary
Women's Educator Sorority
from 1978-1980 and the
American Association of
University Women (AAUW).
She was the secretary of Mu
Phi Epsilon, Honorary
Women's Sorority from 1978-
1980 and Chairman of Red
Cross Knitting during World
War II. She was the director of
the Chase County Community
Chorus for four years and the
Christian Church Choir for six
years. She was a member of
the Methodist Church Choir
and the First Congregational
Church Choir. She was nominated Woman of the Week by
the Emporia Gazette in 1960
and was featured in the
Emporia Gazette's
"Community Spotlight" on
July 25, 1975.
Survivors include one
daughter, Althea Lucile Lovitt;
six grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband;
one son, Donald Eugene Owen;
one sister, Goldie Marie
Harness Owen; and one brother, Vernon Franklin Harness.
Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. March 26, 2003, at
the First Congregational
Church, Emporia. Rev. Chad
Poland will officiate. Burial
will be in Maplewood-
Memorial Lawn Cemetery,
Emporia. ,

or Presbyterian Manor and
