Patton, Clara Maria Davis DEATH OF MRS N M. PATTON
Following an illness of many weeks, Mrs. N. M. Patton died at the Patton home in the southwest part of the county last Sunday evening at 10:30 o'clock. The funeral was held at the Clements church, Rev Lynn Rupert, pastor of the Methodist Churches of Cottonwood Falls and Strong City, preaching the sermon. Interment was in Prairie Grove cemetery west of this city.
Clara Maria Davis daughter of William and Rebecca Davis was born January 9, 1858, in Fulton county, Illinois. She moved when a small girl with the family to Missouri, where they spent two years and in the year 1868 they came to Emporia, Kansas, where she grew to young womanhood.
She was married January 30, 1876, to Nelson M Patton. They came immediately to Clements and this county has been their home practically ever since. To this union three children were born Mrs. Florence Pyles of Elmdale, and Ed and Ray of Homestead, who with the husband and father survive to mourn her departure. She is also survived by one brother, Joe Davis, two sisters Mrs. Hester Engeland of Seattle, Wash and Mrs. Janet Williams of Port Arthur, Texas; Seventeen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren survive besides a host other relatives and friends.
Mrs Patton was truly a home woman. Her greastest joy was in her home and family and the grandchildren who were always so near and dear to her. Never was the night too dark or stormy or cold for her to go to help care for the sick.
She was a member of the Friends Church of Homestead and in her every day walk of life lived close to her Savior. In her last illness she talked with the family of this great love and her willingness to go to the wonderful land not prepared by hands.
The following letter from Mrs. Patton’s niece, Miss Nell
English, indicates how great was the love and how high the regard of all her relatives for her.
Seattle, Washington, July 20, 1927
Dear Aunt Clara,
We feel you are holding your row. You must take heart and want to live for all those who love you. We sang this hymn in church Sunday and it seemed they were singing it especially for you:
“Fight the good fight with all they might,
Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right;
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
Thy joy and crown eternally,
Thy joy and crown eternally.
Faint not nor fear, His arms are near,
He changeth not, and thou are dear,
Rely on Him, and thou shalt see
That Christ is all in all to thee,
That Christ is all in all to thee.
Hope has been so good about writing and letting us know how you are. Remember, you have not gone your three score years and ten yet, which the Bible promises and you should have a long period of years with us yet.
We have tried to surround you with God’s loving care and have prayed diligently for your recovery. (And you must do your part by taking courage.)
Your life has been one of wonderful service to others, and now we trust you will be granted a few years of reward in the way of freedom from pain and still stay with us. Please give our love to Florence and the others too who are standing by. This is a beautiful world and you have so much to live for, so stay as long as you can.
Please give our love to Uncle Nels, he needs you so much. You can help us in our prayers by wanting to live and if you will take heart again, you will be sure of a blessing for you and all the other dear ones too.
God is nearer to you than hands and feet and He will help you if you ask Him to, so please try, Aunt Clara. Mother sends her best love to all.

Clara Marie Davis Patton,50 Year Resident of Clements Dies
Mrs N M Patton passes at home after long sickness. Funeral held Tuesday. Mrs N M Patton of Clements died Monday at her home after a sickness of some time. The funeral services were held at Clements, Tuesday afternoon, after which interment was at the Prairie Grove Cemetery. The Rev Lynn H Rupert had charge of the service. Mrs Patton had been a resident of this county for more than half a century, she having come to Clements when she married Mr. Patton, January 30, 1876. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, January 30, 1926.
