Patton, Susan Frances
Funeral services for Mrs. Susan Frances Patton, who died November 6 in South Dakota, will be held at the Roy S. Gibson funeral home, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Fred Shaw of the Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Mrs. Patton was born May 1, 1851, in Missouri, and lived in Chanute for many years, going to South Dakota about a month ago. She was married to John T. Patton, who died in 1922. She was the mother of 11 children, two of who preceded her in death.
Survivors are J. R. Patton of Willow Springs, MO., Mrs. Bertha Stogsdill, Cabool, MO, Mrs. Emily Shoecraft, Alexandria, S. D., Mrs. Jessie Garrett, Colorado Springs, CO, Mrs. Cora Vinyard, Fowler, Calif., Mrs. Anna Roberson, Fresno, Calif., W. S. Patton, Chanute, KS, Mrs. Rebecca Anderson and Noah Patton of KS.

Notes: From Margaret E. Haynes, great grand-daughter of Susan F. Hawkins Patton. According to information given by her mother, Susan Frances was born May 1st, 1852, in Savannah, Andrew Co., Missouri, the daughter of John Wesley Itawkins and Rebecca Ann Best Hawkins. Her parents brought her and two brothers, William Riley & Isaac Richard, and a sister Rebecca Jane to the Kansas Territory and Chase County and the Clements area in 1857. They settled about a mile and half west of Clements, on the north side of the Cottonwood River. Two more brothers were born, Prince Lafayette and John Henry Hawkins, before their father went to the Civil War with the KS Cavalry, never to return. he died during the war near Fort Smith, Arkansas. And this family had to learn to survive without the father. Susan Frances grew up in the times of Indians and desperados and many other things and had lots of stories to tell her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a tall, very kind woman but could be fearless when defending her family. She lived a long time in Chanute with my grandparents a short distance from my parents home and was 91 when she died from complication of a hip fracture. She married my great grandfather, John Thomas Patton, son of John Patton & Mary Ann Ring Patton, Feb. 24, 1870 in Chase Co., KS. All except one of their I1 children were born in Clements (Jessie was born near. Halstead, Harvey Co., KS) before they moved to Sargent, Texas Co., Missouri about 1904. Their children are: John Richard, Mary Helen, Albert Sylvester, Noah Andrew, Rebecca Elizabeth, Susan Anna, Bertha, Winfield Scott, Jessie May, Rose Emily, and Cora Etta Patton.
