Payne, Margaret Elizabeth Patton

Margaret Elizabeth (Patton) Payne was born December 20, 1845, in Sullivan Co., Indiana, daughter of John & Mary Ann (Ring) Patton.

She married Mashack Payne, October 15, 1865, in Sullivan Co., Indiana, after his military service during the Civil War. One child, Anna, was born in Sullivan Co. in 1866

In 1867, Margaret and Mashack moved to Chase Co., Kansas and settled in the Cedar Point area. In 1868, Margaret's parents and family moved to Chase Co. Mashack & Margaret farmed in the Cedar Point area for thirty years, two of their babies, Rachel and Maggie, are buried in Cedar Point Cemetery.

In 1898, Mashack & Margaret Payne & seven children moved by covered wagon to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) and settled in Chickasaw & Amber area, Grady Co., Okla. Two daughters, Anna & Rosa, had married in Chase Co. Anna stayed in Chase Co. & Rosa was in Ohio.

Margaret E. (Patton) Payne died on September 4, 1923, in Amber, Grady Co., Oklahoma, and was buried in Amber Cemetery, in Amber, Grady Co., Okla.

Mashack and Margaret Elizabeth (Patton) Payne had twelve children, ten born in Chase Co., Kansas, one in Indiana & youngest born in Okla. Their children: Nancy Anna, Rachel Josephine, Rosa May, Maggie Allice, Ulysses Sherman, Laura E., Charlotta, Jessie (a daughter), Effie, Logan, Ettie, and Charley.

Unfortunately we have been unable to find an obituary for her but I found a Record of her funeral dated September 4, 1925, showing that she died in Amber when she was nearly 80. I have photos of her & husband Mashack Payne & of their headstone in the Amber Cemetery.

From the first time I read about Margaret I wanted to know more about her & her family. I met her granddaughter Ruth in 2003 through letters & telephone conversations & I enjoy keeping in contact with her & she shared many stories about her grandparents & family in Chase Co. & in Indian Territory. Ruth knew her Grandmother Margaret Payne and loved her dearly and described her Grandma Margaret, "My memories of Grandma are childhood memories. She worked hard but could always listen to childish wishes. She had a gramophone with cylindrical records. There was one record she played for me so many times she must have gotten tired of hearing it..." Ruth continued, "To me she had all the qualities of a real lady."

There's a Sketch in the Chase Co., Kansas Sketches, Vol. 1, about Mashack and Margaret E. (Patton) Payne, written by their daughter Anna (Payne) Talkington.
