Payton, Lydia A Sharp

Lydia A. Sharp Payton (Peyton)

Mrs. Lydia A.Payton, wife of the late Phillip Payton, and a resident of Chase county for 55 years died at her home at Bazaar, Wednesday February 17, 1915 following a long illness.

Mrs. Payton, who was born in Tennessee, moved to Missouri in 1855 and from there to this county in 1860. She was married in 1863, and with her husband celebrated the fifty-second year of their marriage in 1914. The death of Mr. Payton occurred last November, making a difference of only a little over three months in their deaths.

Nine children survive who are: M.H. Payton of Lahano, Okla., J.D. Payton of Binger, Okla., R.E. Payton, Mrs. Sager, Mrs. Lawrence all of Bazaar, Mrs. Davis of El Reno, Okla., and Mrs. Vieweg of Minco, Okla.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at the family home at Bazaar. Rev. Strange of Matfield preached the sermon and the body was laid to rest in the Sharps Creek cemetery.

When a girl of 12 years, Mrs.. Payton was converted and became a member of the Christian church. She has always lived a devoted Christian life. As a wife and mother, her love and solicitude for her family knew no bounds. She was the kind friend of all her neighbors and her sympathy and aid were given so freely in time of trouble to all. Her death has brought great sorrow to the Bazaar neighborhood which has known her for more than half a century. She will be truly missed by her children, friends, and relatives.

Mrs. Payton whose maiden name was Lydia A. Sharp was united in marriage to Philip Payton in 1863 and to this union ten children were born, six sons and four daughters. One son died in infancy and another son, R.T. Payton died in 1906 at the age of 22 years.

Besides her children she leaves six brothers, five sisters and thirty four grandchildren. Her brothers and sisters are Anderson Sharp, Cal Sharp and Cape Sharp all of El Reno, Oklahoma. Henderson Sharp of Geary, Oklahoma, John Sharp of Bazaar, William Sharp of Emporia, Mrs. S. Penrod of Oakwood, Ok., Mrs. P Greenleaf of Geary, Ok., Mrs. M.E. Brandley of El Reno, OK, Mrs. Ann Davis of Redmond, Oregon, and Mrs. P.B. McCabe of Bazaar.
