Peak, Helen L Payton

Helen L. Peak, 84, of Emporia died at her home March 5, 2003.

Helen L. Payton, the daughter of Jacob H. and Esther E. Slabaugh Payton, was born near Allen on Oct. 10, 1918. She married Clifford Peak at the First Methodist Church of Emporia on Sept. 17, 1955. He died Oct. 11, 1978. Mrs. Peak worked for the Bunge Corporation Soy Bean Mill in Emporia, retiring in 1992. She began working for the company when it was known as the Lord Grain Company in the 1940s.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Emporia, the Topaz Club and the Circle of Friends Club, both in Emporia.

She is survived by a sister, Leona Yenze of Emporia; three nieces; two great-nieces; and two great-nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister who died at birth, her parents and her husband.

Funeral services were at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, March 8, 2003. The service was conduct- ed by Dr. James Darby, First United Methodist Church, Emporia. Interment was in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Memorial contributions are with the First United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home 605 State, Emporia, KS 66801.
