Pyles, William Thomas "Tom"

W. T. "Tom" Pyles had been in failing health for some months. Services held Monday. Interment at Elmdale Cemetery. W. T. Pyles, 80, of Elmdale, who was born and lived all of his life in Chase County passed away Friday in Emporia where he had been taken about a week before following a stroke. He had been in failing heath for some months. Mr. Pyles was well known throughout this area having been a prominent farmer and stockman in the Clements and Elmdale vicinities until his retirement. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Elmdale Methodist church with the Rev. Retha L. Sadler in charge, assisted by the Rev. J S Newsom. Mrs. James Way, Miss Mary Lou Davis, Bill Pretzer and Howard Wood sang accompanied by Miss Christa Lee Thompson. The pall bearers were Otto Frey, Mac Ballew, Paul Wood, Harry Starkey, George Dawson and Arthur Drummond. Interment was in the Elmdale Cemetery.

William Thomas Pyles, Tom to his friends, eldest son of Thomas J and Elizabeth Critser Pyles, was born in a log cabin on Silver Creek, northwest of Clements, November 30, 1871 and passed away September 29, 1952 in the Newman Memorial Hospital, Emporia, at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 29 days. He grew to manhood in the Silver Creek neighborhood and received his education in the Silver Creek and Clements public schools. He was baptized in his youth in the Methodist church and made his confession of faith to his pastor in his declining years after he was unable to attend public worship. In Cottonwood Falls on May 14 1894 he was united in marriage with Florence May Patton. They became the parents of eight children. They made their home on a farm east of Clements until 1910 when they moved to a farm west of Elmdale.

Mr. Pyles was preceded in death by his wife, who died July 7, 1946 and three children: William Everett who died in infancy; Leona O Gardner, who died April 10, 1944 and Evadna Byram who passed away July 29 1949. He is survived by two sons, Nelson E. Pyles, Reading, Kansas; Thomas J of the Elmdale home; Three daughters, Mildred P King, Wichita; Cecile F Clark, Salina; and Velma I Drummond, Emporia; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; four sisters: Mrs Martha Longfellow, Chilan, Washington; Mrs Marian Drietsch, Los Angeles, Calif; Mrs Linnie Shaft, Hutchinson and Mrs. Jane Ralsback, Peru, Nebraska, two brothers, Dave Pyles Hood River Oregon and Jeff Pyles, Julian, Nebraska; a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. The children and grandchildren will remember him before his health failed as a hardworking man, a lover of little children, an humble man who sought no praise.
