Redick, Jerry Lynn Local man dies in Emporia:
Jerry Redick, 44 of Wichita, is believed to have drowned in an Emporia State University fountain, Wednesday, Oct. 30. ESU police officers found Redick, who had recently been living with his parents in Cottonwood Falls, in the water just after 7 p.m. Wednesday. They called an ambulance and the Emporia Police Department for assistance.
Redick was declared dead at Newman Regional Health in Emporia after being taken there by ambulance personnel. Emporia Police Department Deputy Chief Mike Williams said Friday, "The death was an accident by drowning." Williams said he had received a verbal report late Thursday afternoon from Dr. Erick Mitchell, district coroner.
"
I'm satisfied after talking with Dr. Mitchell there was absolutely nothing else involved." Williams said noting that the investigation division's involvement was finished and reports would be turned over to the ESU police, the lead agency in the case.
Reports said that two students had seen Redick at the fountain around 6:30 pm and reported it to staff in the library, who called ESU police for a report of a man sleeping. When officers responded to the fountain they discovered Redick in the water and called for assistance. Williams said that Redick had been at the college waiting for his father, James Redick of Cottonwood Falls, who was at ESU attending a class.
Jerry L. Redick, 44, died Oct 30, 2002 at Newman Regional Health in Emporia. A Celebration of His Life was held Nov. 4, 2002 at the First Baptist Church, Cottonwood Falls. Pastor Rick Smith of the First Baptist Church and Pastor Delmer White of Antioch Baptist Church in topeka officiated at the service.
Interment was in Prairie Grove Cemetery, Cottonwood Falls.
Jerry Lynn Redick, the son of James and Norma Brown Redick, was born Nov 20, 1957 in Los Angeles, Calif. He graduated from Chase County High School and attended Emporia State University and Wichita State University. He was a technician at the Kansas Dialysis Unit in Wichita. He was a member of the College Hill Methodist Church, Wichita. He is survived by his parents of Cottonwood Falls and two brothers, Jeff Redick of Neosho Rapids and Ted Redick of Kansas City, Mo. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jay Redick in 1995. Memorial contributions to the Chase County all-Veterans Memorial or to the First Baptist Church may be sent in care of the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845.
