Reyer, Berniece Elizabeth Reufener

Berniece Elizabeth Rufener Reyer, 82, of rural Strong City died Aug. 6, 2002, at Newman Regional Health in Emporia. She was a homemaker and helped her husband farm. The funeral was Aug. 10, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in Cottonwood Falls. The Revs. James Patterson, Loy Mitchell and Harold Mitchell officiated. Burial was in Prairie Grove Cemetery.

She was born Berniece Elizabeth Rufener on Dec. 16, 1919, at Cottonwood Falls, the daughter of Bernard B. and Rosa Piel Rufener. She graduated from Chase County Community High School in 1938. She worked five years at Kuhl's Drug Store. She married Darwin K. Reyer on Dec. 16, 1944, in Emporia. He survives.

She is also survived by two sons, Craig Reyer of Elmdale and Kim D. Reyer of Strong City; a daughter, Sidney Suzann Formaz of Gunnison, Colo.; and a brother, John Rufener of Cottonwood Falls; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Three brothers, Sidney Rufener, Quinten Rufener and Woodrow Rufener, died earlier. Mrs. Reyer was a member of the United Methodist Church in Cottonwood Falls.

Memorials in her name to the Chase County 4-H Council or the Chase County EMS can be sent to Croy Funeral Home, 27 Maple St., Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845. she lived for over 64 years. She was a partner in farming with her husband. She was a mem- ber of the First Friends Church, Emporia.

She is survived by three sons, Ervin Homer Hancock, Hugoton, Gail Wayne Hancock and Paul Duane Hancock, Elmdale; two daughters, Margaret Esther Noller, Derby and Naomi Ruth Starkey, Emporia; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; sev- eral nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Carlene Pitts, Emporia. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, four sisters and one great granddaughter.

The funeral service was at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, on Aug. 10, 2002. Interment was in the Hillside Cemetery, Saffordville. Memorial contributions either to the Friends Missions or Hand in Hand Hospice, Emporia, may be sent in care of the funeral home. Aug 16, 2002
