Riggs, Clarence Victor

Long Time Resident of Cedar Point Dies

Funeral Services for Clarence V. Riggs who Died Saturday in Emporia Hospital Are Held Tuesday.

Clarence Riggs, a resident of Cedar Point for 40 years, passed away Saturday at the Newman Memorial hospital, Emporia. He had been at a rest home in Cottonwood Falls for some time before being taken to the hospial the day prior to his death.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 11, at 2 o'clock at the Brown Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls. The Rev. Retha L. Sadler of the Strong City Methodist church was in charge. Mrs. Charles Ireland sang, accompanied by Miss Marlabelle Simmons. The pall bearers were M. B. Heckendorn, Ralph Linnens, Clifford Shaft, Gus Carpenter, Sam Brickell and Floyd Gardner. Interment was in the Cedar Point cemetery.

Clarence Victor Rlggs, son of Henry and Ruth Riggs, was born May 12, 1876, in a log cabin at Winthrop, Mo., and died October 8, 1955. He was orphaned at the age of three years and lived in the orphans' home at Leavenworth for 2 years, after which he was adopted by the Hickstine family. In his early life he was associated with "Indian John" in Clay county, who made and sold medicine. He had lived in Chase county fo 40 years. He was a telegraph operator for the Santa Fe railroad at DeGraff, Neva, Alki and Cedar Point. He was a members of the Odd Fellows lodge, No. 50, Emporia, for about 40 years. He was a second cousin of Ezra Cornell, founder of Cornell University.

Preceding him in death were two sisters and one brother. Survivors include three nieces, Mrs. Stella Dennis, San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Nellie Wentword, San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Edith Kenney, Eureka, Kans.; four nephews, Ollie Riggs, Port Orchard, Wash., William Riggs, Wichita; Charles Riggs, El Monte, Calif., and Robert Riggs,Cottonwood Falls .
