Roberts, Gerald

Gerald Roberts, 85, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at the Salina Regional Health Center.

Gerald Roberts, the son of Emmett and Clara Suebert Roberts, was born Oct. 5, 1919, in the Council Grove community. He grew up in the Strong City community and attended the Strong City schools.

He began his rodeo career at the age of 13 and was World Champion All Around Cowboy in 1942 and 1948. He was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, The Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs.

He moved to Abilene in 1964 and established the Chap-Parel Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of rodeo equipment.

He married Pat Hershberger on May 27, 1966.

He was a liftime member of the Western and English Sales Association, lifetime member and Gold Card holder in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He had been a member of the Screen Actors Guild when he was a motion picture stuntman. He was an honorary member of The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo Committee and the Abilene Elks Club.

He is survived by his wife, of the home; one son, Jim Roberts, Abilene; five daughters, Lala Roberts, Geri Roberts and Kasey Smith all of Dallas, Texas, Claudette Roberts, Lancaster, Calif., and Joye Turner, Joplin, Mo.; one sister, Gloria Beck, Clay Center; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford, Ken and Howard Roberts; one daughter, Jaye Roberts; and one sister, Marge Hart.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church in Abilene with Pastor Stan Norman officiating. Interment was in the Abilene Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Justen Cowboys Crisis Fund, sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home. P.O. Box 758, Abilene, KS 67410.
