Roberts, Samuel Frederick

Samuel F. Roberts, 88, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita.

The son to Thomas D. and Doris M. Langandorf Roberts, Samuel “Sam” Frederick Roberts, was born June 9, 1919, at Strong City. He grew up on the Carson farm and attended school at Forest Hill.

Sam and Irma Smith were married Feb. 13, 1939, in Cottonwood Falls.

He served during World War II as a member of the 807th Engineer Aviation Battalion of the U.S. Army Air Corps stationed in Okinawa. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad for over 30 years retiring as a Road Master on July 1, 1979, at Dodge City. He was a member of the American Legion in Florence and the Lowry Funston Post No. 1980 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Emporia.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Samuel “Rick” Roberts of Cedar Point; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Joyce Ann Cummings; a sister, Doris Roberta Cowley; and a half-sister, Eva Evans.

Services were Wednesday, May 21, at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls. Pastor David Gass of Cedar Point Community Church officiated. Interment, with military honors, followed at Strong City Cemetery, Strong City.
