Two die in Hwy 50 crash

Two Evergreen Park, III., men die in Tuesday, Aug. 15, crash

Ramon Rojas-Ortiz Sr., 65, and Joell Rojas, 16, both of Evergreen Park, Ill., died from injuries they received when their vehicle collided with a semi on Highway 50, approximately 1/2 mile west of Strong City at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 15, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol online crash log.

The patrol reported that a 2002 Chevrolet extended cab pickup driven by Rojas-Ortiz was eastbound on Highway 50 when it crossed the centerline and struck a westbound semi driven by Michael Castello, 32, of Amherst, Ohio.

Two other passengers in the Rojas-Ortiz vehicle—Elia Rojas, 50, and Elisabeth Rojas, 11, also of Evergreen, Ill. escaped with their lives. Elia was reported as disabled and Elisabeth as possibly injured.

Castello and a passenger in the semi—Michael Hershberger, 23, of Massilon, Ohio—were not injured in the collision.

Following the collision both vehicles left the road. The semi caught fire after Castello and Hershberger had gotten out of the vehicle.
