Scarberry, Myrtle Brand

Myrtle M. Scarberry, who was known as "Grandma Turtle," 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at her home in Emporia.

She was born Sept. 11, 1925, in Lineville, Ala., the daughter of Rodely Shepherd and Green Brand. She married Herbert Scarberry Sr. on Dec. 31, 1953, in Louisville, Ky. They later divorced.

Mrs. Scarberry, a homemaker, was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Daniel Scarberry of Emporia and Herbert Scarberry Jr.; and five daughters, Linda Miller, Viola Scarberry and Sue Baysinger, all of Emporia, Virginia Parrish of Magnolia, Texas and Bonnie Dold of Strong City; two brothers, Luther Brand and Arthur Brand, who live in Alabama; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Three sons, James Raley, Randy Scarberry and Walter Scarberry died earlier, as did a sister, Cordelia Paris and two brothers, Ross Brand and Oscar Brand.

The funeral was Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. Joe Tuttle of the church presided. After the service, Mrs. Scarberry was cremated. Memorial contributions are requested to the Salvation Army or to Hand in Hand Hospice sent in care of Charter Funerals-Emporia Chapel, 50 W. Sixth Ave., Emporia, KS 66801.
