Schmitt, N Aline

N. Aline Austin Schmitt, 85, died March 12, 2004, at her residence in Great Bend.

The daughter of Fred J. and Nora Ward Austin, she was born Aug. 4, 1918, at Cottonwood Falls.
She married Verne G. Schmitt on June 20, 1942, at Glendale, Calif. Mr. Schmitt died Aug. 21, 1999.

She received her bachelor of science degree in Business Education and Life Teaching Certificate from Emporia State Teachers College, and her master's degree from Fort Hays State University. She worked at McDonnel-Douglas Aircraft Company, Long. Beach, Calif., from 1942 to 1946, then returned to Kansas. She was a retired business education teacher having taught 25 years in Pawnee Rock and Great Bend High Schools and Barton County Community College. After retiring from teaching, she worked at Turner and Boisseau Law Firm for 10 years.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Spiritual Life Sunday School Personal Association, Birthday Club, AARP and a Life Member of the American Legion Auxiliary, having served as Unit President, 7th District President, all of Great Bend and Chapeau of 8/40 Reno Salon #197, Hutchinson.

Survivors include two sons, Verne Lynn Schmitt of Hays and Robert Wayne Schmitt of Mission; one brother, Fred Austin Jr. of Topeka; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Austin; and one sister Lorene Scott.

Funeral services were March 16, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Great Bend. The Reverend Gary Brooks officiated. Interment was at Pawnee Rock Cemetery, Pawnee Rock. Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend was in charge of the burial. Memorial contributions are suggested to Barton County Humane Society or First United Methodist Church or Order of the Eastern Star.
