Shumate, Frank William "Bill" Frank William "Bill" Shumate, 84, formerly of Elmdale died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, at the Flint Hills Care Center in Emporia.
Frank, the son of Harvey and Harriett "Hattie" Soyez Shumate, was born April 21, 1921, in Cedar Point. He graduated from Elmdale High School and received an Associate Degree in Accounting from Emporia State University in 1950.
He did income tax returns during the tax season for several years. He, also, managed the Robbins Ranch for Richard Robbins at Hymer. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. during WWII.
He and Joan Wood were married Aug. 21, 1949, in
Emporia.
He was a farmer/rancher on their family farm on Diamond Creek most of his life. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Elmdale. He was, also, a member of the V.F.W. in Chase County and the American Legion of Strong City. He was a member of the Buck Creek Gun Club at Cottonwood Falls and a member of the National Rifleman's Association.
He is survived by his wife of the home in Emporia; two sons, Mark William Shumate of Lawrence and Matt Wood Shumate of Roswell, N.M.; one daughter, Denise Ann Shumate-Calvert of Emporia; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lillian Shumate Thurston.
A Celebration of Life Service was held Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the BrownBennett-Alexander Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls. The Rev. Bob Colerick from the First Christian Church in
Emporia officiated. Military honors were provided by the U.S. Marine Corp. of Topeka, at Prairie Grove Cemetery, rural Cottonwood Falls.
