Sorenson, Mary Ellen Lawrence

Mary Ellen Sorenson, 91, Littleton, Colorado died Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Bear Creek Nursing Care Center in Morrison, Colorado. Born September 28, 1916 at Bazaar, Kansas, she was the daughter of William Miles Lawrence and Martha Eliza (Payton) Lawrence.

She graduated from Chase County High School in 1934 and attended the State Teacher’s College in Emporia for a time. She taught school for four years in Chase County before marrying Andrew M. Sorenson on June 1, 1941. He preceded her in death on August 29, 1975.

She was a homemaker most of her life. Mary believed her greatest achievement was her four children. She was also an avid gardener and a lover of nature, books, and poetry. Many of these loves have been passed to a new generation.

Survivors include four children: David Sorenson and wife, Gwen of Littleton, CO., Roxanna Penn and husband, Frank of Lakewood, CO., Margaret Childers and husband, LeRoy of Iowa Park, Texas, Robert Sorenson and wife, Virginia of Fallbrook, CA.

She had six grandchildren, Shannon Koebel (Karl), Tricia Nicolosi, Krista Penn, Kara Penn (Adit Ginde), Sue Hinchliff (Chris) and Scott Sorenson (Rachel).

Mary took special pride in having six great grandchildren, Caleb and Logan Nicolosi, Robin and Mila Hinchliff, Bryant and Bree Sorenson. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and 7 brothers, Everett, Earnest, Harold, James, Earl, Elmer, and Robert Lawrence and one sister, Jenny Ann.

The daughter of William Miles and Martha Eliza Peyton Lawrence, she was born Sept. 28, 1916, at Bazaar. She graduated from Chase County High School in 1934 and attended the State Teacher's College in Emporia.

She taught school for four years in Chase County before marrying Andrew M. Sorenson on June 1, 1941. He preceded her in death on Aug. 29, 1975. She was a homemaker most of her life.

Survivors include two sons, David Sorenson, Littleton, Colo. and Robert Sorenson, Fall-brook, Calif.; two daugh¬ters, Roxanna Penn, Lakewood, Colo. and Margaret Childers, Iowa Park, Texas; six grand-children; and six great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and seven brothers, Everett, Ernest, Harold, James, Earl, Elmer and Robert Lawrence and one sister, Jenny Ann.

Funeral services. were Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Penwell-Gabel Flint Hills Chapel, Council Grove. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a library or botanic garden of your choice.
