Spence, Laura Mae McCabe

Laura Mae Spence, 87, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Stormont-Vail in Topeka.

Laura Mae McCabe, the daughter of Robert Lee and Winnie McCracken McCabe, was born May 20, 1919, at Bazaar. She and Darrell Spence were married July 13, 1940, at Cottonwood Falls. He preceded her in death, Nov. 30, 1999.

She graduated from Cottonwood Falls High School. Her first job was as a telephone operator in Bazaar. She worked as a cook with the Chase District #284, at Clements, Elmdale and Chase County Middle School Strong City, before her retirement on May 23, 1997, after 43 years. She was a cook at YMCA Camp Wood for 30 years. She was a member of Elmdale Extension Club, Embroidery Club and Justamere Club.

She is survived by a son, J.D. Spence of Valley Falls; a daughter, Joyce Wenger of Topeka; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a brother, John McCabe; and two sisters, Florence Scott and Ruth Schuler. Services were held Friday, Dec. 15, at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Chapel, with The Rev. John Hastings and eulogy by Jerry Pittman. Burial followed at Bazaar Cemetery, Bazaar.
