Stephenson Howard C OBITUARY OF HOWARD
C. STEPHENSON
Howard C. Stephenson was born in Jackson County, Ohio, August 22, 1870. He came to Kansas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Stephenson, to their home near Clements in 1881.
His education was obtained in the common schools here and the State Agricultural College and also in a business college in Sedalia, Missouri. He taught school several years before his marriage in 1904 to Hattie L. Jack of Plymouth. To this union were born five children, Mary, Alvin, Paul, Veda and Nellie, all of wham survive him. He died in Phoenix, Arizona, October 28, 1920.
Such is a recital of the principal events of his life, yet they disclose almost nothing as to the real man because one must know of a person's habits, his hopes and environments, and the acts of his life to get a correct idea of his worth.
Howard Stephenson was by nature a man of vigorous action, aggresbroad human sympathy which endeared him not, only tohis family and relatives but also to his neighbors and a large number of friends among many classes and in many places. He was generous in matters pertaining to the well-being of his neighborhood, and a friend in need to the unfortunate. He was a devoted husband, a kind father and a good citizen.
During the latter years of his life his activities were lessened on account of almost continuous ill health, which at times caused intense suffering. This he endured without complaint. As he had traveled somewhat extensively, and was a close observer, he had a fund of information, anecdotes and experiences, which with his genial way of relating them, made him companionable to an unusual degree.
His wife, and children and his brother Jacob accompanied the body to Clements where funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Monday, November 1, Rev. Mayo of Cottonwood Falls, officiating. The
Masonic ritual services were held at the grave by members of Advance Lodge No. 114, A.F. and A. M., to which ho had belonged for many years.
In that large gathering of people who had met at the little church in Clements to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased, I am quite sure none were there who did not think the community had suffered a loss, and each person there had lost a friend.
