Stephenson, Rachel Best rose The Passing Of A Good Life.
The death of Mrs. William H. Stephenson of Clements removes one of the county's best known women. Mrs. Stephenson had lived in Chase County thirty years. Her life has been devoted to her home and she was a woman with the most sunny nature. Besides her many close friends there are left to mourn her death nine sons and one daughter. They are
John, James, Howard, Charles,
Henry, Richard, Jacob, George, William and Mrs D. J. White.
Obituary
Rachel Best Rose was born in
Carol Co., Ohio, July 12, 1837, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. H. White, near Clements, Kansas, Nov.12 1911, aged seventhy-four years, and four months.
She was married February 12 1862 to Wm. H. Stephenson near Jackson, Ohio at which place they lived until the autumn of 1881 coming then to their home on Silver Creek near Clements, Chase county, Kansas. That has been her home ever since.
To this marriage of Mr, and Mrs.
Stephenson was born eleven children, nine sons and two daughters, all of whom are living except the
younger daughter, Kate, who died Dec. 30, 1881. Mr. Stephenson,
her husband, died May 30 1908.
Death of Mrs. Stephenson
Mrs. Wm. H. Stephenson, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. J. White, near Clements Nov. 12th, was one of the best known women of the Clements community. She was kind and loyal to her friends and family; a faithful Christian and she honored the name of womanhood. For thirty years she had dwelt at Clements, happy in the work of her home and the care of a large family of children which she lived to see grown to manhood and womanhood and who have received the love that only a mother may bestow.
Although she had not been very strong for several years yet Mrs. Stephenson always maintained her cheerful disposition. While visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. J. White, she suffered a sudden stroke of paralysis as she attempted to mount the stairs leading from the basement of her daughter's home. That was on Saturday, Nov. 11th, and on the following Sunday afternoon death relieved her of her pain and
took from us a noble life. But her work was finished here and she was found ready and waiting for the Master's call.
The funeral was held Tuesday, Nov.
14th, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. White. Rev. McNabb preached an eloquent sermon touching the character and attributes of the departed one.
Burial was then made in the Clements cemetery beside the graves of Mr. Stephenson, who died May 30, 1908, and a daughter, Kate, whose death occurred Dec. 30, 1881.
Mrs. Stephenson's maiden name was Rachel Best Rose and she was born in Carol county, Ohio, on July 12, 1837. On Feb. 12, 1862, she was married to William H. Stephenson near Jackson, Ohio, where they made their home until 1881. In that year they moved to Kansas, settling on Silver creek near Clements, which has since been their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson were the parents of eleven children, all of whom are now living accept the younger daughter. The children are John, James, Howard C., Henry, Richard, Jacob, William and Mrs. D. J. White, all of Clements; Charles of Oregon and George W., of Los Angeles. And to these, all join in extending consolation and sympathy in the sad loss of their mother.
