Miss Helen Stubenhofer, 70, of Strong City, who was a retired registered nurse and well known in the Chase County area, died at 6 o'clock Friday evening in St. Mary's Hospital, Emporia. She had been hospitalized on several occasions since the onset of an illness about six months ago.
Born on a farm on Diamond Creek north of Elmdale on Jan. 22, 1901, the daughter of George and Nora Maloney Stubenhofer, she received her early schooling in Chase County. In 1925, she was graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Topeka after which she worked for a time in hospitals in Topeka and Osage City, and did private nursing duty in this county.
In 1936, the Stubenhofer home in Strong City, where her parents had moved from the farm in 1920, became the Stubenhofer Maturnity Home, operated by Miss Stubenhofer and her sister, the late Miss Frances Stubenhofer, also an R. N. It remained in that location until 1951, when it was moved to the hill on Cottonwood Avenue in Strong City. The two nurses assisted at the births of upwards of 2,000 infants whose parents came from a wide area of the state.
A member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Strong City, and of its Altar Society, Miss Stubenhofer was also a member of several social clubs in the community. After her retirement from the nursing profession, she had worked as a waitress in several local restaurants.
Surviving her are one brother, Karl Stubenhofer, and one sister, Mrs. I. J. (Gertrude) Rettiger, Strong City; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, George Stubenhofer, and two sisters, Mae Deragisch and Frances Stubenhofer.
Recitation of the Rosary was held at 8 p. m. Monday in the Croy Funeral Home, Cottonwood Falls. Funeral services were held at 10 a. m. Tuesday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Rev. Father David Cushing officiating. Pallbearers were Howard, Jim and Paul Stubenhofer, Jack Grant, Jack Holmberg and David Rettiger. Burial was in St. Anthony's Cemetery.
