Towle, Lela Mae Wilcox

Lela M Towle, 87, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Newman Regional Health, Emporia.

Lela Mae Wilcox, daughter of Chauncey and Marie Russell Wilcox, was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Emporia. She and Francis Towle were married Dec. 24, 1948, at Osage City. He preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 2003.

She attended Washburn University and then earned enough hours at the University of Kansas to be able to teach school. She earned a degree in education at Kansas State Teachers' College. She, also, earned a degree in Library Science. During her husband's terms as Sheriff of Chase County, Lela was cook at the jail, dispatched and a duly appointed deputy for Chase County. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church USA of Cottonwood Falls, the North Central Library Association and Chase County University Women.

She is survived by two daughters, Frances Lynn Alexander of Council Grove and Dorothy "Dot" Mae McDonald of Emporia; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, LeRoy Wilcox and Robert Wilcox.

The funeral service was Thursday, July 20, at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, with The Rev. Pat Ireland of the First Presbyterian Church USA, Cottonwood Falls, officiating. Interment followed in Prairie Grove Cemetery in rural Cottonwood Falls.
