Waddell, Herbert Everett
Herbert Everett Waddell was born on September 5th, 1886, in Chase county. He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Waddell and besides his parents leaves to mourn his death his wife and three children, Winnie, age 7; Woodrow, who is 5 and Edward who is 3 years of age. He also leaves two brothers, Lew Waddell, of this city and Fred Waddell, of Syracuse, Kansas.
During his early life Everett lived on the farm of his father on South Fork several miles east of this city and came to this city about the year 1898 when his father was elected county clerk and the Waddell family moved here. Since that time this city has been his permanent home.
After attending the City School and the County High School, Everett then went into the mercantile business with his father and brother, Lew, and with the exception of a short time spent on the farm he had been engaged in this business most of the time since.
On February 26th, 1908 he was united in marriage to Miss May Wilcox, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Wilcox, of this city, and his sudden death has been a great shock to the wife he leaves as well as to his parents and brothers and many friends.
There has probably been few young men of this city who were more universally liked than was Everett. Always jovial and pleasant by nature, it has been few times, indeed, when his friends and acquaintances have
seen him otherwise.
No matter where or how he was met, he invariably had a kindly word and a smile for every one, and because of this he will be missed greatly for his is an absence that cannot be filled.
During the past few years, Everett in addition to his business in operating the Waddell grocery store had spent a part of his time helping his father in cutting and preparing walnut logs for shipment, and it was while at this work, Thursday, December 20th, that the tragedy occurred which caused his death.
The funeral services which were attended by one of the largest gatherings to be seen at a funeral ceremony here in many months was held Sunday afternoon at the W. A. Waddell home. Rev. Gustafson, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city, preached a very touching sermon and then the remains were laid to rest in Prairie Grove Cemetery in the family lot where lies buried a younger brother of the deceased, Gus Waddell, whose death occurred fourteen years ago.
The sorrow to the bereaved wife and children and father, mother and brothers has indeed been great but to them does the many friends and neighbors give their heartfelt sympathy which while it may do little to lessen the great sadness which has come into their lives so suddenly and unexpected must still give them comfort to know that the sorrow is not their's alone.
