Wheat, T D

Former Emporia resident T.D. Wheat, 88, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at his home in Iola.

Mr. Wheat was the guidance counselor at Iola High School from 1962 until 1981, when he retired. Earlier, he taught at Plevna, Eureka and Cottonwood Falls. He also helped in the development of the Iola area mental health programs.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served from 1941 to 1945. He was a drill instructor for infantry troops and also played in the Army band.

The son of Cecil C. and Mary E. Dumford Wheat, he was born July 30, 1916, in Parkerville. His family moved to Augusta, where he grew up and graduated from high school. He enrolled at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia to study music education and, after his military service, he returned to Emporia and graduated with a degree in music education. He later graduated from KSTC in Emporia as a certified counselor. While in college, he had a band named T.D. Wheat Orchestra.

He married Naomi J. Ehrlich on Jan. 12, 1941. She survives.

Mr. Wheat was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and directed church choirs. He also was the director of the Iola City Band for 14 years and worked with barber-shop singing groups.

He was a member of the Iola American Legion, Veterans of the Foreign Wars, Lions Club and the Allen County Historical Society.

He is also survived by a son, Tom Wheat of Iola; a daughter, Judy Francis of Olathe; and two grandsons. A sister, Julie Wilson, died earlier.

The memorial service was March 19, 2005, in Wesley United Methodist Church at Iola. Contributions to the T.D. Wheat Memorial Music Scholarship Fund may be, sent in care of Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel, 16 N. Buckeye, Iola, KS 66749.
