Whitney, S E
The death of S. E. Whitney which ocurred at him home at Hymer on August 26th, removes from Chase county one of its best known and most highly respected of men. His many years in the live stock business which he followed from the time of coming to this county in the sixties" until he retired from active business a few years ago, were years of busy ones for him.
A man use to great responsibility and in whom all imposed implicit confidence, Mr. Whitney at once became a friend and a favorite with the men he met and naturally he made a success of the business he took up and followed nearly all of his life.
Although a busy man, yet he was never too busy to give of his time and of his means to a worthy cause and to a neighbor or friend in need of his services. In short he was a gentleman in the true sense of the word and his accommodating manner and pleasant demeanor were assets which were always with him.
Mr. Whitney was born in Montpieler, Vermont, on January 10th, 1845. He grew to manhood in New England, and at the outbreak of the war enlisted in the Federal Army where he served his country faithfully until the close of that great struggle. Shortly after the coming of peace, he emigrated to Kansas, first locating at Lawrence.
He was soon after married to Mary Elizabeth Burnett and to this union three children were born. The eldest a daughter, named Mary, died in chidhood when three years of age, while the family still lived at Lawrence. The other two children who were sons are Ned and Phil, who still survive and have lived practically all their lives in this county.
On coming to Chase county, Mr. Whitney was a stockholder and was for many years of the "101" Cattle Company, an important organization which owned thousand of acres of land in this county and in other sections of Kansas and the southwest and which did an extensive business in cattle.
Later this company disposed of its holdings in this county to Mr. Whitney, its president, and following this the latter then engaged in the cattle business himself.
...In the year 199, Mrs. Whitney died and was laid to rest in the family plot at the old home in Lawrence where the little daughter was interred so many years ago. The death of his wife was a sad blow for Mr. Whitney and the two sons who were still small boys, but he continued to give to his children aII the fatherly love and care that only a good father can and his memory will ever continue to be a sacred one to these sons who are now men.
Although he gained much wealth through his earnest endeavor and good judgment, yet worldly gain did not change Mr. Whitney's temperament toward his more unfortunate fellowmen and he was always the same good comrade and friend, ready to help and cheer, and he lived a life which was above reproach of all those who knew him best.
