Wilson, Adeline Spencer
Mrs. W. W. WILSON
Miss Adeline Spencer was born at Macomb, (McDonough County) Illinois, June 12, 1850, and passed from this life on May 28th, 1930, at the age of seventy-nine (79) years, eleven (11) months, and sixteen (16) days.
On December 11th, 1870, she was united in marriage with William Washington Wilson, at Roscoe, St. Clair, Missouri. To this union eleven (11) children were born, seven (7) sons and four (4) daughters, two (2) of whom
died in infancy.
She is survived by her aged husband, and Miss Etta Wilson, of the home address; Everett, William, and John, of Peyton Creek; Arthur, of Bazaar; Albert, of Council Grove; Clyde, of Manhattan; Mrs. LeRoy Pendergraft, of Plymouth; and Mrs. John Lewis, of Strong City; seventeen (17) grandchildren and six (6) great grandchildren; also one (1) brother, C. B. Spencer, and one (1) sister, Mrs. J. F Cochran, of Vona, California.
Mrs. Wilson was one of the real pioneer women of the state. Her husband came to Washington County, Kansas, in 1868, and took a claim in Washington County. Two years later, he returned to Missouri for his bride, who was to share in making a home in the then new state. For fourteen (14) years they lived in Washington County, and then moved to Morris County, (Kansas), where they lived but one year.
In 1875, they came to Chase County, Kansas, where they have lived happily all these years, and have witnessed the developments in the march of progress. Unafraid of hard work and slender resources, in those early days, she devoted herself to the rearing of her large family. Few mothers of modern times know the work involved in cooking and sewing for a family such as she raised, with, none of the modern conveniences of this day. She was a type of the old fashioned mothers, who believed the home was her throne and to succeed there she was making a contribution to the social order, which would last through all time.
Though never strong, she carried her load of responsibility without murmur or complaint and was compensated by seeing her large family all reach maturity except two (2).- Now she rests from her labor of love, and her memory abides like a beautiful dream. She was converted and joined the Baptist Church early in life. After her marriage, she transferred her membership to the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which she died a member. Her last illness was of long duration and she suffered much, but was brave and patient to the very last, when she slipped out of this body of pain to be with God.
