Ybarra, John G
A former Emporian, John G.
Ybarra, 82, of Topeka, died
Feb. 20, 2003, at a Topeka hospital.
The Mass of Christian
Burial was celebrated Feb. 24,
2003, at Most Pure Heart of
Mary Church in Topeka.
Burial was in Sacred Heart
Cemetery in Emporia; a detail
from Fort Riley conducted military honors.
Mr. Ybarra was born June
12, 1920, in Eskota, Texas, to
Vincente and Gumesinda
Garcia Ybarra. He married
Ramona Chavez on Nov. 7,
1947, in Emporia; she died
June 8, 1980. He married
Marjorie Anderson Austin on
June 22, 1984, in Topeka.
Mr. Ybarra retired in 1984
after, 35 'years. With the
Western Area Supply of the
U.S. Postal Service.
During World War II, he
served in the Army Air Corps
and was stationed in North
Africa and Italy with the 814th
Engineering Aviation
Battalion.
His memberships included
the Most Pure Heart of Mary
Church, the Knights of
Columbus Council 4254 and
the James W. Gibbons
Assembly of the Fourth
Degree. He was also a life
member of Philip Billard Post
1650 of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, a 47-year member of
American Legion Capitol Post
1, and a member of Moose
Lodge 555 and the Shrine
Legion of Honor. Over 15
years, he volunteered 1,527
hours at the Colmery-O'Neil
Veterans Administration
Hospital in Topeka.
He is survived by his wife; a
son, John Ybarra Jr. of Topeka;
a daughter, Gloria Ann Ortega
of Olathe; and one brother, Joe
G. Ybarra, also of Topeka; six
grandchildren; and one great-
grandchild.
