Yoakem, James M.
James M. Yoakem, father of Chas. Yoakem of the southwest part of this county, and for many years a resident there, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Jackson at Shields, Calif., Sept. 24th. His death followed a long illness. He was in his eighty-eighth year. The funeral services were held Sept. 26th, in Fresno and interment made in Belmont Memorial Park.
Mr. Yoakem was one of the early residents of the Wonsevu vicinity where he lived for many years and was engaged in farming. He and his wife and some of their younger children left this county about thirty-five years ago, moving to California. His son, Charles Yoakem, is the only one, of the Yoakem children now living here.
The following is taken from the Fresno Bee which gives a brief sketch of his life and activities in California:
James M. Yoakem was a native of West Virginia. He engaged in farming there and in Kansas before moving in 1907 to Newman and later to a ranch on Shields Avenue, Kerman, where he developed the raw land by setting out peach trees and growing alfalfa.
He was one of the first persons to settle here and make improvements. His peaches won many prizes at the Fresno County Fair. He was one of the organizers of the Kerman Telephone Company and a leader in organizing the Kerman Creamery. His efforts induced many persons to settle in this district.
“Yoakem served as trustee of the Dakota School for six years.
“Yoakem married Miss Anzina Wilmoth in West Virginia. Mrs. Yoakem died two years ago. The couple had six children, four of whom survive, Mrs. Laura Olsen of San Fernando, Mrs. Ada Jackson of Kerman, Charles Yoakem of Kansas and Eugene Yoakem of Arizona.”
