Obituaries


Obituaries and death notices, especially those written years ago, are not just a valuable source of names, dates and places for a genealogist. Grouped together as they are here they become an intimate social history of a community, written by journalists who usually knew the deceased and their families.
Some are tributes to pioneers, patriarchs, pastors and parents whose life stories are the history of Gove County. Others are tender remembrances of children, women who died in childbirth or those struck down by disease, unfortuante accidents or natural disasters. There are stories honoring the supreme acts of sacrifice of local young men and women who died overseas in distant wars as well as reports of sensational crimes that live on in story for generations.

Died.--Anna K. MOLLER was born in Denmark, 30 May 1856, died 20 Oct 1915, aged 59 years, 4 months and 20 days. She grew to womanhood in the old country, coming to America in 1837 (sic, probably 1887). Her parents then resided in Gove county, KS. In 1892 she was united in marriage to Mr. Victor ANDERSON of Weir City, KS. They lived there till 1905 when they moved to Gove county and resided here till her death. She leaves a husband, daughter, four brothers, and a host of friends to mourn her loss. She was sick just six days, and was ready to go when the Heavenly Father called her home. She was a sister to ex-Probate Judge T. U. MOLLER. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones.

ANDERSON --- Charles Alfred ANDERSON

Charles ANDERSON of Gove county died Friday night, 5 Feb 1915, and was buried in the Healy cemetery Sunday. He was born in Sweden in 1 Feb 1849 and came to this country in early manhood, settling in Indiana. He moved to Gove county in March 1886 when he homesteaded in Lewis Township on the quarter he has lived on ever since. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Folin. Surviving Mr. ANDERSON is his wife, Mrs. Emma Justine ANDERSON, and six children all of whom live in Gove county except Mrs. Minnie CARTWRIGHT, who lives in Indiana, and who came here to attend the funeral. Mr. ANDERSON had been in very poor health for a year or more and his death was not entirely unexpected.

Healy, KS--Clarence ANDERSON, 74, died Saturday, 15 Jun 1968 at the Scott County Hospital after a long illness. Born 1 Jun 1894 near Healy (in Lewis Township, Gove Co, KS), he had lived all his life in Gove county and at Healy. A retired farmer, he married M. Faye NELSON 29 Dec 1926 at Salina.

He is survived by the widow; son, Delbert, Healy; sisters, Mrs. Minnie CARTWRIGHT, Prairie Du Rocher, IL; Mrs. Lois VERHOEFF, Littleton, CO; two grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Healy Methodist Church; Rev. Thomas Bandy. Burial will be in Healy Cemetery.

ANDERSON --- Emma Justine ANDERSON (Emma Justine JOHNSON)

Emma J. ANDERSON (nee JOHNSON) was born at Donovan, Ill, 5 Jul 1857.

On 30 Mar 1880, she was united in marriage with Charles ANDERSON, a native of Sweden.

To this union were born six children as follows: Mrs. Minnie J. CARTWRIGHT of this city, Frank and Clarence of Healy, Kansas, Mrs. Lois VERHOEFF and Mrs. Grace BADER of Louviers, Colorado.

In the latter part of June (1931) she came from Kansas accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. CARTWRIGHT, to make her future home. Shortly after her arrival she was stricken with a malady that was more than medical assistance with good nursing could master. After several weeks of patient, but intense suffering, she peacefully passed away 26 Aug 1931, at 3:30 p.m. Thus passes from earth a good wife, a noble character and a devoted mother. She has gone to join her husband and daughter, Mrs. Lulu LEWIS, who have been awaiting her and also her parents who have been gone several years.

Besides her children she leaves to mourn her loss 12 grandchildren, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Two of the brothers and three sisters were here and accompanied Mrs. Cartwright as far as Union Station where they met Mrs. Steve GRASSINGER, who had gone by train with the body, which was taken to Healy, Kansas, her home. Mr. CARTWRIGHT took charge at St. Louis.

The funeral took place at Healy, Kansas from the M.E. Church, Sunday, August 30.

To the members of the family and all relatives, this community extends its heartfelt sympathy.

Faye ANDERSON, 84, Scott City, KS, died 5 Jun 1989 at Park Lane Nursing Home, Scott City. Born Faye NELSON 22 Jul 1904 at Tescott, KS, she came to Western Kansas where she was employed as a clerk at Hamm's Dept. Store in Oakley and then taught school in South Gove Co., Fairview School, Dist No. 38.

She married Clarence H. ANDERSON 29 Dec 1926 at Salina, KS. He died 15 Jun 1968. She retired as an elementary school teacher in 1963, after teaching more than 20 years in Gove, Lane, Finney and Scott Counties.

She was a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 658, Healy. She and her husband lived in Gove Co. until forced to move out in World War II when the Gunnery Range came into Gove County. They moved to Healy where they made their home until the past four years when she had been a resident of the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

Survivors are son, Delbert and wife, Pat, and their children, Larry of Phoenix, AZ and Kathy of the home at Julesburg, CO.

Memorial services were held Wed., 7 Jun at 2:00 p.m. at the Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City with Rev. Richard Fraley, the United Methodist Minister at Healy officiating. Burial was at the Healy Cemetery with the Rebekah Lodge graveside rites. Memorials may go to the Park Lane Nursing Home, Scott City.

Mrs. Wm. BADER, 51, of Louviers to be buried Saturday. Had Lived in DuPont Community for 21 years.

Mrs. William BADER, 51, passed away at 1 a.m. Wednesday (5 Jan 1949) in the Presbyterian Hospital in Denver. She had been in the hospital since 27 Nov 1948.

Mrs. BADER was born near Healy, (in Lewis Twp, Gove Co) KS, on 14 Jul 1897. Her maiden name was Grace Zelda ANDERSON. She was married to Mr. BADER in Kansas 27 years ago, and the couple made their home at Louviers for the past 21 years. Mr. BADER is engineer of the narrow-gauge locomotive in the DuPont yards at Louviers.

Surviving Mrs. BADER are her husband and a son, Lyman W. BADER of 400 N. Logan Ave., Littleton, CO; two sisters, Mrs. Lester VERHOEFF, Louviers, and Mrs. Minnie CARTWRIGHT, Prairie du Rocher, IL; two brothers, Frank and Clarence ANDERSON, Healy, KS; and two grandchildren in Littleton.

The Rev. H. H. Nicholson of the Louviers Community church will conduct the funeral at the Nickels-Hill chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday and burial well be at Littleton. The pallbearers will be David REA of Denver, Ed SHEA of Sedalia, and Del COLVIN, William DALE, Dan HEBEL and Edward EHMANN of Louviers.

CARTWRIGHT --- Minnie Josephine CARTWRIGHT (Minnie Josephine ANDERSON)

Minnie J. CARTWRIGHT, 96, who resided at St. Anthony's Hospital, Alton, IL, died at 10:58 p.m. Sunday (22 Jan 1978) at the hospital. She was born 2 Jul 1881 at Rensselaer, Jasper Co, IN.

In Mar 1886, when she was 4 1/2 years old, her parents, Charles A. and Emma J. (JOHNSON) ANDERSON, homesteaded in Lewis Twp, Gove Co, KS. Minnie was confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran Church in Lewis Township and attended school also in Lewis Twp. After receiving her teaching certificate she taught at various Gove county schools from 1899 to 1908. She filed on a homestead in Lewis Township, Gove Co, KS, in 1902 and proved up on it in 1909.

On 28 Jul 1908 she married Onnie Lee CARTWRIGHT at Watseka, IL, and they settled at Prairie du Rocher, IL. Minnie taught school at Prairie du Rocher. Onnie died 7 July 1922.

Surviving are a daughter, Edna WEBER of Alton, three sons, James of Alton, Lee of Pamona, CA, and John of San Francisco, CA; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Following cremation, burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey, IL.

The Gorden F. Moore Community Park has been named as a memorial.

HOOVER --- Charles O. HOOVER

--- Charles O. HOOVER, son of Rev. Isaac L. and Mary E. STUTSMAN HOOVER was born in the Lone Star Church neighborhood in Douglas County, Kansas, July 15, 1881 and departed this life on May 30, 1973 at Wichita, Kansas.
He was married to Ida May METSKER, January 1, 1905. He was baptized at an early age into the Church of The Brethren. Dr. HOOVER graduated from the Kansas City School of Medicine in 1910 and practiced in Overbrook, Ks., for 14 years. With his family he moved to Quinter, Ks., where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 1965.

Dr. HOOVER was active in Church and Community work. He held many offices in the church, served as mayor of Quinter and as a member of the school board for many years. [He was Gove County Coroner from 1926 to 1962.]

He is survived by his wife, Ida, three sons, Ivan L. of San Pedro, Calif.; Cecil R. of WaKeeney, Ks., and John S. of Wichita, Ks. Two daughters, Gulah, Mrs. Garman H. DARON, Oklahoma City, Okla. and Maxine, Mrs. Thomas DOYLE of Wallingford, Penn.; one brother Foster S. HOOVER of Kansas City, Ks.; 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Merle W. who died in November, 1960.

JOHNSON --- ANDREW M. JOHNSON
Grainfield Cap Sheaf, Grainfield, Kansas, Thursday, OCTOBER 30, 1936
---Andrew M. JOHNSON was born in Sweden, May 24, 1860, and departed this life Saturday morning, Oct. 24, 1936, at the age of 76 years and 5 months.
When a small child he was baptized in the Swedish Lutheran church. He came to America with his parents in the year of 1868 and settled in the state of Illinois. In 1871 he moved with his parents to Straton, Iowa, then in the year of 1878 he moved to Kansas and settled on a homestead seven miles west of Plainville, Kansas.

He was united in marriage to Miss Anna NORTH, December 25, 1894, to this union two children were born, Mrs. Ethel BLAND who resides in Gove, and Carl who preceded him in death, May 31, 1921.

In the year of 1908 they moved to Grainfield and in the spring of 1909 they moved on the farm about nine miles south west of Grainfield where he lived at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his loss a loving wife, one daughter, two sisters of Plymouth, Mass., one brother C.O. HUNT of Hill City, a niece Mrs. Chas KLINE of Denver, Colo, whom they raised from infancy, five grand children, and a large host of neighbors and friends.

Mr. JOHNSON was one of the early pioneers of Western Kansas, who understood all the hardships of pioneer life. He was a friend to young and old, a kind and thoughtful husband, always with a smile, and endured his suffering patiently. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, October 27, at the M.E. Church in Gove with the Rev. Paul BROOKS, pastor of the Gove church, and Rev. DIX of Morland, delivering the service.

Burial was made in the cemetery at Plainville. Few of the many friends of Mr. JOHNSON accompanied the body to Plainville Tuesday morning where a short funeral service was held.

Pallbearers were: Mr. Chas SPIHER, Mr. J. B. CHENOWETH, Mr. Carl SELENSKY, Mr. M. A. GILLESPIE, Mr. Ferd FRANCEOUR, and Mr. John J. STUBBS.

JOHNSON --- CARL ANDREW JOHNSON
THE PLAINVILLE TIMES, PLAINVILLE, KS, 9 June 1921
Carl Johnson the only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. JOHNSON of Gove country former citizens of Natoma died at his home near Gove Tuesday of this week. Heart trouble which had affected him since birth was the cause of death. He had been examined by the most eminent physicians and specialists of the country but they were unable to relieve his trouble which was of a very unusual nature. At the time of his death his parents were at Rochester, Minn, where Mrs. JOHNSON was receiving treatment at the Mayo Bros. Institute.
Carl Andrew JOHNSON was born at Natoma Kansas October 2nd 1899 was united in marriage to Miss Netta WOOTERS May 9, 1921. Departed this life May 31st, 1921 at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. JOHNSON, Gove County Kansas. Age 21 years, 6 months, 29 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, father, mother, sister Ethel, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church, June 3, 1921. Rev. Parker gave the funeral sermon.

KAHLER --- Albert KAHLER

"Albert Kahler Killed in Action"
"He gives everything at Luxemburg Battle on December 23rd"
---Pvt. Albert A. KAHLER was killed in action on December 23, according to a telegram received Monday morning by his mother, Mrs. Anna KAHLER of Park. The message said : "The secretary of War desires me to express his deep regrets that your son, Private Albert KAHLER was killed in action on twenty-third of December in Luxemburg. Confirming letter follows. Dunlop, Acting the Adjutant General."
Private KAHLER was serving with Company F, the 10th infantry and had returned the middle of November to the front lines after being hospitalized in England where he was treated for wounds received on Sept. 18th when he was shot thru the right foot while on the battle lines. In recent letters to his folks Albert stated that his foot was troubling him considerably when he walked, but that he was meeting up with members of his old company again after the short absence.

Pvt. KAHLER who was 21 years of age, entered the army Feb 18, 1944 and received his training at Camp Fannin, Texas. On July 5th he arrived at his home for a short furlough, then was sent overseas immediately afterwards, landing in England on August 15th. The first letter written by him after his arrival overseas was dated August 18th and he was then already in France and just a month later, was wounded.

Before entering the service Albert farmed the home place. His father, Joe KAHLER died just a year prior to the day on which Albert was killed. Mr. KAHLER died December 23, 1943 and then Albert assumed the farming responsibilities until he was called into service, at which time his brother Joe returned from Chicago to take over the farm, which is located 8 miles northeast of Park.

Albert is survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna KAHLER, Joe, Cletus and Agnes of the home; sisters, Mrs. Pauline JOHNSON of Ayr, Nebr.; Miss Rosie KAHLER Denver, Colo.; Katie KAHLER, Chicago Ill.; Mrs. Frances COBURN, Kansas City Mo.; Mrs. Barbara GODSEY, Little Rock, Ark.; Miss Elisabeth KAHLER Oakley, Kansas and a brother Phillip KAHLER, Quinter.

LEWIS --- Emil Theodore LEWIS

E. T. LEWIS, 59, Grainfield-Gove mail carrier, died very suddenly at Grainfield at about 8 o'clock, Monday morning (20 Nov 1938) just after he had loaded freight for his daily trip to the county seat. Heart trouble is said to have caused death. He was the twin brother of County Treasurer F. A. LEWIS.

Emil Theodore LEWIS was born in McDonough County, IL, 21 Aug 1879. With his parents he came to Gove County in 1887, and for many years resided in Lewis Township. On 21 December 1904 he was married to Jennie (Sarah Jane) HOCKERSMITH who lived in the country that is now known as Missouri Flats, Gove County. To this union were born seven children, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are Glenn of Bingham, UT; Ted of Midvale, UT; Curtis of Uravan, CO; Mrs. Gladys MORRIS, Garden City, KS; Nellie LEWIS of Winfield, KS. Their mother passed away in January of this year.

In 1914, Emil was elected sheriff of Gove County. He served two terms. During the World War he was quite active on the draft board, and his consideration and actions of kindness to the boys who served in Uncle Sam's Army will long be remembered. After serving as sheriff, he operated the Gove Garage for a time. Later he was carrier on the Grainfield-Gove mail route. In recent years he has lived on a farm near Grainfield.

He was a staunch Republican, and worked faithfully for the interests of his party.

This year he was again awarded the contract to carry mail between Grainfield and Gove. He started on the job about July 1st. He was big-hearted, accommodating, well fitted for the position Uncle Sam had assigned to him.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 o'clock this (Thursday) afternoon at the Gove Methodist E. Church. Burial at Gove Cemetery.

Emma Christina JOHNSON, wife of John O. LEWIS, was born in Elghult Socken, Kronoberg Lan, Sweden, on 19 Apr 1842 and died of lung congestion 7 Jan 1929.

Emma Christina LEWIS, nee JOHNSON, was born in Elghult Socken, Kronoberg, Smaland, Sweden, the 19th of April, 1842. She emigrated to America, arriving at Mt. Pleasant, IA in 1867. She was joined in holy wedlock to Andres Peter NORRBORN 5 Aug 1871. He was killed in an accident 8 Oct 1871.

She again married on 1 Mar 1872, to John Oscar LEWIS of Burlington, IA. They settled in Raritan, IL, where they lived until the spring of 1887 when they moved to Gove County, Kansas with their family, now consisting of four sons and two daughters.

She is survived by five children, 24 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her youngest daughter Huldah died 16 Jan 1917. The two eldest sons, John and Carl, reside in Denver, CO; Francis and Emil and daughter Amelia residing in Gove County, KS.

Since her husband's death, 18 Jul 1913, she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Amelia MOLLER.

In her girlhood days she was confirmed into the Lutheran faith to which she has remained a faithful member. Her faith and trust in her Heavenly Father's call was constant to the end.

She responded to her Heavenly Father's call to come home to restful peace and joy Monday morning, 7 Jan 1929, at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 20 days.

Funeral services were conducted from the Moller home Wed p.m. 9 Jan 1929 by Rev. J. E. Gruver. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery north of Healy, KS. A very large body of relatives and friends assembled to pay their respects to a mother and an old settler of the country. The floral offerings were beautiful.

LEWIS --- Francis August LEWIS

Francis August LEWIS, a twin, was born 21 Aug 1879 to John Oscar and Emma Christina LEWIS in McDonough Co, IL. He died 16 Apr 1959 in the Gove county hospital in Quinter, KS, aged 79 years, 8 months, 27 days.

His parents came from Sweden to America in 1867. They moved with their family to Gove Co. in Mar. 1887 when Francis was 7. They passed through the hardships and trials familiar to the early Western Kansas pioneers. He grew to manhood in the vicinity north of Healy.

Mr. LEWIS was married 19 Apr 1908 to Lulu Victoria ANDERSON. To this union six children were born. Mrs. LEWIS died 4 Feb 1917.

The father was devoted to his family and cared for them, both as father and mother. In 1927 they left the farm and moved to Gove to give the children their education.

He was baptized October 1879 and confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran Church, and remained a member of that church until his death. For many years he was a member of IOOF Lodge and Modern Woodmen.
He was well known and had many friends throughout the county. He served as county clerk and county treasurer for many years. He also held various offices in township, city and school districts.

He loved sports and in his earlier years was a baseball player. He liked school activities and reading was his greatest pleasure in later years.

He was preceded in death by a son Alfred, Apr, 1941; his parents, wife Lulu, two grandsons, one sister, two brothers and one half brother.

Surviving are these children: Mrs. Jerry BRETTON (Thelma) Grinnell; Mrs. Lyle HEINZ (Mildred) of Dighton; Raymond LEWIS of Healy; Mrs. Wayne COOK (Eula) of Logan, UT; Mrs. Ed EHMANN (Alice) of Sedalia, CO; a sister, Amelia MOLLER of McPherson, and 12 grandchildren.

Mr. LEWIS, a splendid example of fine manhood, highly esteemed by all who knew him, will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services were from the Gove Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and burial was in the Healy cemetery. In charge of the services were Rev. Roger O. Shanks and Rev. Warren P. Smith.

Former Police Magistrate Dies
John A. LEWIS, 78, of 3100 S. Penn, Englewood, CO, former Englewood police magistrate, and a familiar figure in this city since about 1915, died Saturday (22 Apr 1950) after an illness which extended several years. Services were held Tuesday at Joss Mortuary with interment at Fairmount.

LEWIS was born in Rockford, IL, 31 Mar 1872, came to Gove County, KS, in 1887, to Colorado in 1890, and to this area in 1909. He was a member of the Christian church here and was an old time member of the school board. He was also in business here at various times. He retired as police magistrate, after several years in the office, which he held in conjunction with the office of justice of the peace, following a heart attack in May, 1948. He suffered a second attack in Nov, 1948, and has been confined to bed since that time. He was first located at Porter Hospital and later moved to a convalescent home.

He was the father of Dudley LEWIS, and brother of F. A. LEWIS, Gove City, KS; C. O. LEWIS, Denver; and Mrs. T. U. MOLLER, of McPherson, KS.

John Oscar LEWIS was born in Odensvi, Kalmar Lan, Sweden, on 1 Dec 1840. A heart attack took his life 72 years, 7 months and 17 days later on 18 Jul 1913, at his home in Lewis Township, Gove County, Kansas.

John Oscar LEWIS came to America in 1867 and resided at Burlington, IA. He was married 1 Mar 1872 to Mrs. Emma NORRBORN, nee JOHNSONn, and to this union five children were born--Mrs. T. U. MOLLER (Amelia) of Courtland, KS; Carl LEWIS of Denver, CO; Francis and Emil LEWIS; and Mrs. Ed LUNDGREN (Huldah) all of Gove County; and a step-son, John LEWIS of Denver, CO. The family later moved to Illinois and on to Gove County, Lewis Township in March of 1887. In Western Kansas, they braved the hardships and rough times of the early-day pioneers.

John O. LEWIS was confirmed and baptized in the faith of the Swedish Lutheran Church in early childhood and remained a member of that church until death.

The appropriate and comforting funeral services were conducted by J. Y. JOHNSON Saturday afternoon in the Swedish Lutheran Church which the deceased had helped to build.

A large number of friends and relatives followed the remains to the last resting place in the little cemetery north of the church.

The departed leaves a wife, three sons, one stepson, two daughters and 17 grand-children to mourn his loss.

Lula Victoria ANDERSON was born 30 Jul 1887, to Charles Alfred and Emma Justine (JOHNSON) ANDERSON in Gove County, KS; died 4 Feb 1917, aged 29 years, 6 months and 4 days at her home seven miles north of Healy. She grew to womanhood in this vicinity was united in marriage to Francis A. LEWIS 19 Apr 1908. To this union were born six children--Thelma, Mildred, Raymond, Eula, Alfred and Baby Alice Gertrude. Besides the children she leaves husband, mother, two brothers and three sisters and a host of friends to mourn her loss.

She was a loving and patient mother, faithful wife and earnest Christian. She realized in the last few hours of life that she must go and she sang, "Think of the Home Over There," and requested those at her bedside to sing "Nearer by God To Thee" and asked for a prayer, after which she bade each one a cheerful goodbye and said, "I'll be going up the road and the gates will be opened wide for me." All were present when death came except two sisters, Mrs. Lois VERHOEFF of Colorado who came later and Mrs. Minnie CARTWRIGHT of Illinois who could not be present.

The funeral was held at the home at 11:00 o'clock Tuesday. Rev. J. E. Gruver of Healy officiating, and burial was made in the Healy cemetery. Music was furnished by the Healy M. E. choir. An unusually large crowd followed the remains from the house to the cemetery. A Friend.

Lakin - Funeral for Dick LITTON 94, longtime Kearny Co., resident will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Lydia United Methodist Church north of Lakin. The Rev. Donald Koehn will officiate. Burial will be at the Lydia Cemetery.
Mr. LITTON, a retired farmer stockman, died Oct 11, 1955 at the Kearny County Hospital, Lakin.
He was born Dec. 16, 1900 Gove County, the son of William Day and Viola WRIGHTER LITTON, grew up and attended school in Gove County.
Mr.Litton was a member Lydia United Methodist Church.
On May 22, 1949, he married Edith GRUSING at Lakin. They have lived in Kearny County since their marriage.
He is survived by his wife, son Don LITTON, Garden City and daughter Susan LITTON, Lakin and one grandson.

Halbert George LITTON, died Jan 24, 1966 at the Gove County Hospital following a long illness. He was born September 17, 1907 the first of three sons born to Benjamin Duffield and Mary Delferna WRIGHTER LITTON, Gove County, Kansas.
Halbert was united in marriage to Velma Louise (GEORGE) September 19, 1932. To this union were born 2 children Halbert Keith LITTON and Georgia Fern OTTLEY.
Mr. Litton was a farmer rancher. At the time of his death he owned a farm near Grinnell in Gove County Kansas.
Mr. LITTON is survived by the wife of the home, his children, two brothers, Vern and wife Hazel of Scott City, Kansas and Ray and wife Dora of Schell City, Missouri, his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held January 27, 1966 at the Gove Methodist Church, Gove, Kansas burial at the Gove Cemetery.

Lewis Ray LITTON, the son of Benjamin and Mary WRIGHTER LITTON, was born June 1, 1915 at Grinnell, Kansas and died JUly 31, 1989 at the Ellett Memorial Hospital, Appleton City, Missouri.
He married Dora Jane BAILEY who preceded him in death November 11, 1988. Ray was a member of the United Methodist Church. He farmed and ranched in Western Kansas and then moved to Wyoming where he worked as a welder in gas plants. After moving to Schell City (Missouri) he continued welding but also worked with Lewis & Son Funeral Home and was a licensed EMT with their ambulance service.
Survivors are eight grandchildren and other relatives and friends. (His children Robert Ray and Phylis Ann preceded him in death).
Funeral services were held August 2, 1989 at the United Methodist Church in Schell City (Missouri) Internment was in Green Lawn Cemetery.

Madora Jane LITTON, daughter of Robert Victor and Isabelle OFFIELD BAILEY, was born September 27, 1915 near Monegaw Springs, Missouri and died November 11, 1988 at Cox North Hospital in Springfield (Missouri).
When only seventeen months old she moved with her family to western Kansas where she attended grade and high school at Oakley, Kansas graduating in 1935.
July 30, 1935 Dora and Lewis Ray LITTON (son of Benjamin and Mary D. WRIGHTER LITTON) were married in Colby, Kansas. They moved to a ranch south of Oakley. They left the ranch and went to construction work in 1952 and settled in Schell City (Missouri), in 1966. She worked at the Nevada State Hospital from 1966 until she retired in 1981.
She was preceded in death by her her son, Robert Ray LITTON and her daughter, Phyllis Ann WALLACE.
Survivors are her husband, Ray, of the home in Schell City, (Missouri), two brothers W.C. BAILEY, Schell City, and Edward BAILEY, Irrigon, Oregon; 2 sisters Luetta BALTHORPE and Eunice SCHWARTS of Eldorado Springs, Missouri, 8 grandchildren, a number of great granchildren; nieces and nephews and loving friends.

Vern Carol LITTON passed away September 20, 1977, St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, Kansas following a long illness. He was born May 11, 1917 to Benjamin Duffield and Mary Delferna WRIGHTER LITTON, Gove County, Kansas, the third of three sons.
He married Margaret Hazel MCQUITTY (daughter of Walter Herman and Annis HOGUE MCQUITTY) April 15, 1940, Gove County, Kansas. To this union three children were born, Larry Vern, Linda Lee BERNING and Leanna Lynn WEBB.
Mr. LITTON was farmer rancher and water well driller during his life time, living in Gove and Scott counties in Kansas. He was a member of Anthem Lodge # 284, Scott City and Isis Shrine, Salina, Kansas.
Survivors, wife of the home, son Larry of Holcomb,KS, daughters Linda Kearny, Nebraska and Leanna Holcomb, KS.; 2 grandsons and 6 granddaughters, brother Ray LITTON Schell City, Missouri, numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church Scott City, burial Scott County Cemetery.

Viola WRIGHTER LITTON was born March 10, 1867 Fairbury, Nebraska to Marvin O. and Mercy DUNN WRIGHTER. She passed away January 25th, 1956. She is buried at the Gove County Cemetery.
Viola met William Day (Doc) LITTON while she was working at Farnsworth and they married April 24, 1884, [settting up house in a dug-out]. Six children were born to that union: Myrtle Olive (Mrs. Benjamin H. PACKARD), Walter Marvin, Benjamin William, James Richard, Maynard and Iva Mae (Mrs. William F. ROEMER).

William Day LITTON was born Sept 13, 1854 at Fairfield, Iowa and departed this life at his home west of Gove at 7:38 o'clock on August 27, 1938 at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 14 days.
In early April 1873 he and his mother and brothers located on Walnut creek in Ness Co., Kansas and from that location they hunted buffalo and wild horses all over that part of the country. In 1882 he came to Gove county and joined the cattle pool.
On April 24, 1884, he was married to Viola WRIGHTER at WaKeeney, Kansas. To this union were born 4 boys, Walter, Bennie and Dick of near the home and Maynard of Selden, Kansas and two girls Mrs. Myrtle PACKARD of Salina, Kansas and Mrs. Iva ROEMER of near the home.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, these children, 19 grandchildren, 2 brothers in Washington state, nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were at the Gove M.E. Church internment in the Gove Cemetery.

Garden City - Verna B. Litton (Verna Beatrice TUSTIN) 99, died March 27, 1986, at Garden Valley Retirement Village, Garden City. Born April 26, 1886, in Rooks County. She married Walter LITTON (son of William Day and Viola WRIGHTER LITTON) March 31, 1909, at Gove. He died Dec. 22, 1954. She was resident of Garden City since 1954.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (Finney Chapter #359), Garden City.
Survivors: daughters, Layla ROYER, Garden City, Alta KING, Deland Fl., four grand children, 10 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Chapel, Garden City, the Rev. Harry WALZ. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Gove Cemetery, Gove.

Edward Julius LUNDGREN, son of John Albert and Augusta Matilda (ANDERSON) LUNDGREN was born 2 Oct 1878 in Motala, Sweden and passed away 3 Jun 1961 at the Gove County Hospital, Quinter, KS.

He was baptized in the Swedish Lutheran Church when an infant and remained true to that faith throughout his life.

He served in the Royal Swedish Army from 1897 to 1899.

After the death of his parents he came to America in 1903 and joined his brothers and sisters in Texas, but soon went to Denver where he lived two years. He moved to Gove County in 1905 and was united in marriage to Hulda Christine LEWIS Nov. 26, Thanksgiving Day, of that same year. They located on her homestead in south Gove County where they endured hardships of the pioneers of those early times. To this union were born 5 children.

Preceding him in death were his wife Hulda in Jan 1917 and a son Richard, in April 1917, also a brother, Carl Albert and 2 sisters, Ida CASH and Emma PAULSEN.

His devotion to his children, having cared for them both as father and mother, was upper most in his life. His love for his neighbors was exemplified by the welcome extended to them when they called in his home, always offering food and entertainment for their comfort and pleasure.

He married Mary (WRIGHTER) LITTON on 25 Oct 1935 and moved to Quinter when the United States Government evacuated the families from the gunnery range in 1943. After about 3 years they moved to Grainfield where they continued to make their home.

He is survived by his wife, Mary D.; a brother, Arvid Falmer, Avoca, TX; and 4 children, Carl Edward of Garden City; Harold Julius, Gove; Ralph Leonard, Winthrop, WA; and Hulda Angeline WILLIAMSON, Wichita, a twin of Richard; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; and 3 stepsons, Halbert LITTON, Grinnell; Ray Litton, Schell City, MO; and Vern Litton, Scott City.

Huldah Christene LEWIS was born 5 July 1877 in Henry Co, IL; died 15 Jan 1917, aged 39 years.

She came with her parents to Gove County in the year 1887 where she resided till her death.

She was married to Edward J. LUNDGREN 26 Nov 1905. To this union were born five children: Carl, Harold, Leonard, Angeline and Richard. She joined the Swedish Lutheran Church in childhood and to this faith she was true, always doing for her Master what his hands found to do.

She was a faithful wife and loving mother. All was done that human hands could do. But our Heavenly Father in his infinite wisdom was fit to call her to a home beyond this vale of tears, where He says there will be no more sorrow, neither will there by any more pain.

Thus we are once more reminded that life is but a vapor that appeareth for a little while and then vanisheth away.

Mary Delferna WRIGHTER, daughter of Kathryn and George WRIGHTER, was born April 25, 1881, in the town of Western, Nebr. and passed away Sept. 18, 1965 at Sabo Park Manor, Lakin at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 23 days.
At the age of eleven she moved with her parents to Kansas where she lived the remainder of her life.
She was married to Benjamin D. LITTON, Dec 24, 1902 and they made their home on a ranch south of Grinnell until his death Nov. 6, 1924. To this union were born three sons.
She was married to Ed. J. LUNDGREN Oct. 25, 1935.
She is survived by one brother, Floyd WRIGHTER, Eugene, Ore., three sons, Halbert LITTON, Grinnell; Ray LITTON, Schell City, MO.; Vern LITTON, Scott City, Ks; several grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren,three stepsons, Carl LUNDGREN, Garden City; Harold LUNDGREN, Gove; and Leonard LUNDGREN, Winthorpe, Wash., and one step daughter,Mrs.Angeline (LUNDGREN) WILLIAMSON, Wichita; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in Gove Methodist church, burial was in the Gove Cemetery.

Walter Herman McQUITTY, 80, died Monday [Feburary 7, 1977] at the Scott County Hospital. He had been a resident of Scott City, since 1943.
Born Nov, 20 1986 at Columbia, MO., he was married to Annis HOGUE on April 14, 1918 at Dalhart, Texas. They resided at Grinnell before moving to this community. He was a member of the First Christian Church and Anthem lodge #284 both of this city [Scott City, Kansas].
Survivors include the widow; sons: Jim Bob of Adelphi, Md., Frank Lee, Venezuela, South America; Harold Leslie, Midland, Texas, Gerald Wesley, Olathe; daughters Mrs. Lawrence (Betty) WATSON, Centerville, Ohio, and Mrs. Vern (Hazel) LITTON, Scott City; 24 grand children and 16 great grandchildren.
Funeral services are being conducted at 2 p.m. today at the church, with Rev, Lowell BRYANT officiating. Burial will be in the Scott County Cemetery, with Masonic graveside rites.

Obituary Mrs. Ella SMITH. Ella MASTIN was born at Garnett, Kans. on April 20, 1874, and came to Gove Co. with her mother, three brothers and two sisters in 1886. They located on a homestead southwest of Grainfield, Kans. In 1891 she was united in marriage to Edgar W. SMITH. To this union six children were born. Her husband and three children (Ethel) Mrs. Robert DEARING, Daniel Harlan (SMITH) and (Myrtle) Mrs Ed BERENBERG preceded her in death. While living in Gove she was a charter member of Gove Chapter 313 Order of the Eastern Star and a 58 year member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge. In infancy she was baptised into the Baptist Church and her membership was in the First Baptist Church of Montebello, Calif. She was a real pioneer mother and raised her family, enduring the hardships of early days on the prairies. Her three surviving children, Mrs R H MENDENHALL of Gove, Ks.; Edgar L SMITH, McMinnville, Oregon and Mrs. Dewey SMITH of Whittier, Calif were all with her in Oct. and again for her funeral Dec. 30, 1959. She was laid to rest in Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, Calif.

Amelia MOLLER, daughter of John and Emma (JOHNSON) LEWIS, was born 27 Jul 1873, in Galesburg, IL. As a young girl, Amelia accompanied her parents to Kansas where they homestead in Lewis Township, Gove County in 1887. Her home was a sod house, and through the next years she experienced the hardships and tribulations of pioneer life. On 27 Sep 1899 she was united in marriage to Thorvald Ulrich MOLLER in Gove Co, KS. They had the pleasure of raising eight children, four sons, three daughters and one niece. Thorvald preceded Amelia in death in 1929, and son Harry of Hannibal, MO, in 1962.

In 1949, Amelia moved to McPherson, KS, from Dighton, KS, and has been a resident of this community since that time. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Amelia was a devoted wife and mother. Her concern and love for her family reflected the deep convictions she had toward her loved ones. Her grandchildren were a great joy to her, giving her many hours of pleasure.

After several years of failing health, Amelia passed on to eternal rest at the McPherson County Hospital on Saturday, 29 Feb 1964, at the age of ninety years.

Surviving members of her family include three sons: Ernest, McPherson, KS; Cecil, Lawrence, KS; Carl, Hoisington, KS; three daughters, Mrs. Helen PORTER, LaHabra, CA; Mrs. Lyla HATLER, Holly, CO; Mrs. Marie DURBIN, Wichita, KS; a niece, Mrs. Angeline WILLIAMSON, and twelve grandchildren.

The memorial service conducted at the First Methodist Church, Healy, KS, on Monday, 2 Mar 1964, at two-thirty o'clock. The resting place, the Healy Cemetery.

Died.--At his home in Lewis township on Thur., 8 Jan 1903, Niels MOLLER, aged about 42 years. He leaves a mother, five brothers and one sister to mourn their loss. The remains were interred in the Healy cemetery. Mr. MOLLER was a good hearted, kind and affectionate brother, a highly respected gentleman, and enjoyed the esteem and confidence of all who knew him. He came to Gove county from Michigan in the spring of 1889 and was well and favorably known by a host of friends. Another brother of this same family died at his home in Sweden on Dec. 10th last. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.

Mr. P. R. MOLLER of Healy, Kan., took suddenly and seriously sick last Sunday evening with peritonitis. He was taken to the hospital at Scott City Wed. as it was thought an operation would help him but the doctor at the hospital said there was no chance for Pete to live, so he was not operated on. He died Friday morning (21 Dec 1923) at 10:30. Was buried in the Healy cemetery, Monday, Dec. 24, at 2:30 p.m.

Died.--R. A. MOLLER of Jerome died Wed., 1 Feb 1899, at his home. He was born about 1831 in Denmark. He and his family moved to Sweden in 1870, then to Michigan in 1884. He came to this county in 1886 and has resided here ever since. He will buried in the Healy cemetery Friday, 3 Feb 1899. Mrs. MOLLER still survives.

Signe Birgitta FREDRICKSON was born the 26th day of December, 1826, in Olberg, Denmark; married Rasmus Andreas MOLLER in 1849; came to Gove county in 1886 where they have resided on the homestead ever since except the last year when she was taken care of by their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Victor ANDERSON at their home also in Gove county; died 7 May 1913 at the age of 86 years, 4 months, and 11 days.

Mrs. MOLLER was the mother of 11 children, six of whom have passed on before. She leaves to mourn her loss five children--Mrs. Victor ANDERSON and Peter MOLLER, of this county, Thos. U. MOLLER, of Republic county, one son in Michigan, and one in Denmark. Besides these, 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren survive her. A number of friends followed her to her last resting place, the Healy (KS) cemetery, where she will sleep until the resurrection morning. Mrs. MOLLER was an industrious woman and the writer has many acts of kindness shown by her as a pleasant memory. May she rest in peace. A Friend.

Thorvald Ulrich MOLLER was born in Tweed, Denmark the 24th day of March 1865. He moved with his parents to Sweden when he was 5 years old and remained here until he reached the age of 17, when he emigrated to America.

His parents followed him in 1884 and settled in Whitehall, Michigan. Two years later they removed to Kansas where they homesteaded in Gove County. He was joined in holy wedlock to Miss Amelia LEWIS in the fall of 1899. Through the years they were blessed with 7 children--four boys and three girls.

The family resided in several towns in Kansas, finally removing to Scandia where they lived for eleven years. In 1925 they came back to Gove County and took up the pursuit of farming.

An attack of flu a month ago left him in a weakened condition; although seemingly recovered in strength his heart failed him suddenly in the early morning of 3 Feb 1929 at the age of 63 years, ten months and ten days.

He is survived by his wife, Amelia, and children--Ernest, Harry, Cecil, Helen, Carl, Lila and Marie; also two brothers: Henry of Stockholm, Sweden; and Albert of New Era, Michigan; and several nephews and nieces.

Confirmation into the Lutheran Church took place while he was a boy in Sweden.

He was an amiable host and a good neighbor, leaving a host of friends who deeply regret his passing from their midst.

Funeral services were conducted from the home, in Lewis township, Tuesday afternoon. Rev. J. W. Gruver of Manning, KS, conducting and H. B. Niles of Dighton, directing. Burial was made in the Healy cemetery.

Emma Cecelia NORELL, daughter of Peter and Christian ERIKSON NORELL, was born near Millville, Minn., March 2, 1878. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith in infancy.
She lived with her parents near Millville until 1881 when the family moved to Springfield [DakotaTerritory], where they lived four years. In 1885 the family moved to Arapahoe, Nebr., remaining there only two years. In 1887 they moved to Gove County, Kansas. They made their home 17 miles north and one-half mile east of Healy.
Here Miss NORELL spent 56 years of her life. During this time she cared for her mother until she passed away in 1920. After the death of her mother for 22 years she cared for her eldest brother, Erik until he died in 1942.
Miss NORELL left the home place in 1943 and spent three years in Quinter [government used land for World War II aerial target practice range]. In 1946 she decided to come to Scott City. Since that time she made her home at 702 Glenn Street.
About a year ago her health began to decline. On July 12, 1954 she entered Good Shepherd rest home in Soctt City, where she remained until the day of her death. She died Wednesday of last week, on her 77th birthday [March 2, 1955].
She leaves to mourn her departure one sister, Mrs. Christine JOHNSON of Gove and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

NORELL --- Mrs. (Christina ERICKSON NORELL)
Christina NORELL was born in Sweden Feb. 26, 1837, and passed away at her home in Lewis Township, Gove County, Kan., December 7, 1920, being at the time of her death 83 years, 9 months, and 11 days. She was united in marriage in Sweden to Peter NORELL. They came to America in 1870 and settled in Minnesota and later moved to Gove County. To this union were born four boys and four girls, the husband and two sons [Olof John and Sven Arnold] having preceded the mother to their resting place. Three daughters - Mrs. P.A. [Christina] JOHNSON, Mrs. P.J. [Magdalena] PETERSON, and Miss Emma NORELL - and one son Eric, besides grandchildren and friends, were present at the funeral services. One daughter, Mrs. [Aaron][Anna] PETERSON, lives at Stockholm, Wisc. One son, Peter, in Barton County, Kan. Services were conducted at the house by [Swedish] Evangelist JOHNSON of Wichita, Kan. Text: Job 14:14, "If a man die shall he live again?" 10v. "But man dieth and wasteth away, yea man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?" 12 v. "So men lieth down, and riseth not, till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep." We are told "Whatsoever the hands find to do, do it with thy might for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest." Other scriptures quoted: Job 19:25,26; I Corinthians 15:51 to 55; I Thess. 4:13 to 18 - death here is classed as "asleep in Jesus." Math. 24:42 to 44, "Therefore be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the son of man cometh." St. John 5:28, 29, "Marvel not at this, for the hour is coming in the which all that are in their graves shall hear his voice, some to the resurrection of life, and some to the resurrection of damnation." 2 Peter 3:9 to 13, "seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness." "God looks upon the heart, while man looks on the outer appearance." - I Samuel 16:7. Closing with a few remarks from Rev. 21. Music furnished by the Jerome Sunday School. A special solo by Miss LONGGOOD, missionary of New York City. "Sweet by they rest." The remains were laid in the cemetery by the church, "there to await the resurrection." She is gone but not forgotten.

"Eric NORELL is Dead"
Eric NORELL, who for 57 years had lived on the NORELL farm in Lewis township, passed away at the Quinter hospital Wednesday night, July 22. He was 81 years of age.
For many years Eric was a familiar figure at the county seat, that is, Eric got up here regularly to pay his taxes and to renew subscription, occasionally to trade with our merchants, and sometimes on business for the township when he was township officer. That was in an earlier day. The last few years Eric hasn't gotten very far from home, because of the infirmities of age.
He was born in Sweden February 3, 1861, the son of Christina (ERICKSON)and Peter NORELL. With his parents he came to the United States in 1870 and settled first in Minnesota, then in Nebraska. In 1885 Eric moved to the farm in Gove county. His father died in 1895 and since the death of their mother in 1920 Eric and his sister Emma have lived on the farm.
Surviving relatives are a brother Peter G. NORELL of Redwing, Kan.; three sisters, Mrs. Lena PETERSON, Mrs. Christina JOHNSON and Miss Emma NORELL all of the Jerome community; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were conducted from the home at three o'clock Friday afternoon, July 24th, with Rev. V. J. SMITH of Gove officiating. Hymns were sung by a Gove quartet, Mrs. Fred CRIPPEN, Miss Beula ROYER, Fletcher SIMPSON, Lauren MENDENHALL.
Pallbearers were E. J. LUNDGREN, George ROEMER, J.E. BARTLETT, Frank ANDERSON, Roll RUSH, Fred LILLIA. Burial was in the Swedish Lutheran cemetery in Lewis township, where lie the bodies of Eric's mother and father.
Out-of-town relatives present for the funeral were Peter G. NORELL and son Valentine of Redwing, Kansas.

Mrs. Bertha PECK, (daughter of George Bernard and Catherine S. SCOTT WRIGHTER) 80 of Grainfield died suddenly at the Long Term Care Facility in Quinter about 12:45, Sunday July 4, 1965 Mrs. PECK had been a resident of the home for about 18 months prior to her death. She had been a long time resident of Grainfield, living most of her married live in that community.
In her immediate family she is survived by two sons, Lee PECK and his wife Annabelle of Oakley, Kansas and Lyle PECK and wife Maxine of Wichita, Kansas, a sister Mrs. Mary (WRIGHTER/ LITTON) LUNDGREN of the rest home in Lakin, Kansas; a brother, Floyd WRIGHTER of Eugene, Ore.; five grandchildren and a daughter-in-law Mrs. Ruth PECK.
She was proceeded in death by her husband Bruce I. PECK and a son Harold. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and took an active part in the W.S.C.S as long as her health permitted.
Funeral services were held July 7 at the Methodist Church in Grainfield. Burial in the Grainfield Cemetery.

Bruce Irvin PECK, son of Isaac B. and Carie M. PECK was born August 9, 1880, at Fairmont, Nebraska and departed this live at the Hadley Memorial Hospital, Hays, KS April 7, 1947 at the age of 66 years, 7 months and 23 days.
He moved with his parents to a farm southwest of Grainfield in 1885 and spent most of his life in this community.
He was united in marriage to Bertha Gerturde WRIGHTER on August 31, 1940 at Grainfield,KS. To this union was born one daughter who died at birth, three sons; Harold Allen Upper Lake, California; Lee Edward Oakley, Kansas and Lyle Edwin Wichita, Kansas.
He attended the Methodist Church in Grainfield and was a member of the Grainfield A. F and A.M. Lodge No. 381, having been Master of the lodge a number of times, he was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, of Grainfield.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, three sons, three grandchildren Pasty Ann, Michael Bruce and David Irvin, one brother, Winn and wife of Wichita, Kansas, one sister-in-law Mrs. Ed (Mary D. Wrighter/Litton) LUNDGREN, Grainfield, one brother-in-law, Floyd WRIGHTER, Cripple Creek, Colorado and a host of other relatives and friends. Internment in the Grainfield Cemetery.

Harold Allen PECK, was born June 23, 1905 to Mrs. and Mrs. B. I. (Bruce Irvin and Bertha WRIGHTER) PECK of Grainfield, Kansas. He graduated from the grade and high school in Grainfield and attened the Misner Dramatic School in Omaha, Nebraska.
He was united in marriage to Ruth A. LAMOREAU, December 15, 1928 at Omaha, Nebraska. To this union were born two children Patsy Ann SLEEPER and David Bruce of the home.
In Harold's younger days he coached dramatics in different high schools in Nebraska and he and his wife traveled in almost every state of the union doing Lyceum and Chautauqua work and also in Canada. They left the Misner players while in California and since that time he has been engaged in other work at Upper Lake, California.
He was a member of the Community Church and IOOF Lodge of Upper Lake. Sadly missed by his mother and brothers, Mrs Bertha PECK, Lee PECK and family and Lyle PECK and family.

Family history
Lyle Edwin PECK, twin son of Bruce Irvin and Bertha Gertrude WRIGHTER PECK, was born Sept 27, 1911 at Grainfield, Kansas.
Lyle was united in marriage to Maxine N. SENTER, September 2, 1939 at Clearwater, Kansas. Lyle and Maxine resided in Wichita, Kansas. He was a owner operator of a gasoline station on Douglas Street [location west across the Arkansas river from Century II]; he later worked for the Goddard School System from which he retired.
Maxine passsed away Janunary 9, 1983 in Wichita. His twin brother Lee Edward PECK passed away Oct 14, 1977.
Lyle married Cletus Marion GEGEN,Nov 16, 1985, at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Wichita, Kansas.
Lyle died November 17,1989, Wichita, Kansas. He was buried at the Clearwater Cemetery, Clearwater, Kansas.

Mrs. Lena PETERSON, a resident of this city since 1943, died Monday, 12 Feb 1951, following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon 14 Feb at 2 o'clock from the Holy Cross Lutheran church in this city, in charge of the pastor, Rev. Karl E. Knebler, and internment was in the Swedish Lutheran cemetery in Gove county.

Magdalena NORELL PETERSON, daughter of Peter and Christina NORELL, was born in Jamtland, Sweden, 20 Feb 1866. While in her infancy she was brought to faith in Christ through holy baptism.

She came to this country in 1870 and lived with her parents in Millville, Minn., until 1881. The family then moved to Springfield, SD and lived there four years. In 1885, they moved to Arapahoe, Nebr, and were there for a period of two years. In 1887 the family settled in Gove county, Kansas.

On 1 Jan 1892 at the age of 26, Magdalena NORELL was united in holy matrimony with Pehr John PETERSON in Gove. They made their home 17 miles northeast of Scott City, in Lewis township, Gove county. To this union, six children were born, four boys and two girls. The oldest child, Peter Andrew, died in infancy. Mr. PETERSON passed away 3 Nov 1907. With the oldest child only 12 years of age and the youngest of 5 children only 2 years of age, she managed the farm and reared the children. In the summer of 1943, she and her oldest son, Frank, left the farm and moved to Scott City, where she had since made her home at 301 Washington street.

She became ill with a heart ailment about the middle of January and was confined to her home ever since.

She leaves to mourn her death her three sons, Frank of Scott City, Walter of Healy, and Grant of Kansas City, MO; her two daughters, Emma CUSTER of Healy and Ida B. GITTINGER of Wallace, one brother, Peter G. NORELL of Red Wing; two sisters, Mrs. Christina JOHNSON of Gove and Mrs. Emma NORELL of Scott City; nine grandchildren and many friends.

P. J. PETERSON was born in Sweden 16 Sep 1857, came to Gove county in 1886, was married to Lena NORELL, 11 Jan 1892, and was resided in "Sweden" for more than twenty years. He was well and favorably known through out the entire county. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction.

Iva Mae ROEMER, daughter of W.C. (Doc) and Viola (WRIGHTER) LITTON, was born July 6, 1899 at Gove, Kansas. She departed life in Salina at the age of 61 years.
IN 1921 she was united in marriage to William Fredrick ROEMER. To this union eight children were born. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Harry, Castle Rock, Colo.; Frank, Oakley; five daughters, Mrs. Phil STRICKERT, Garden City; Mrs Arnold WEYAND, McPherson; Mrs. Robert NELSON, New York City; Mrs. James KINSLEY, Oakley; Mrs. Gail SWARTS, Salina; three brothers, William, Delores, Colo.; B.W. Gove and James, Lakin and one sister Myrtle PACKARD, Salina,and 21 grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her daughter, Erma Nae.
She was a member of the Gove Methodist Church and a past Noble Grand of the Oakley Rebekah Lodge 227 and a past Chief Matriarch of the L.E.A. 167 and past president of the L.A.P.M. #20. Her entire life was spent in Gove and Logan counties.

Layla R. 'Sue' Royer, 85, 2308 N. 3rd, died Sept.25, 1995 at Terrace Garden Care Center.
The daughter of Walter and Verna TUSTIN LITTON, she was born Jan 9, 1910, in Gove County, where she grew up. After high school she received her normal training, and then returned to Gove where she taught school for several years.
On May 2, 1931, she married William J. ROYER in Garden City. He died Sept. 8, 1990. She was also preceded in death by a brother Dale LITTON.
She is survived by a son, Jake ROYER, Garden City; a duaghter Neta STEPHENS, Arvada, Colo.; a sister, Alta KING, DeLand, Fl.; four granddaughters Deb JARMER, Garden City, Stephanie MARTINEK, Tempe, AZ., Barbara STEPHENS, Englewood, Co., and Julie CAREATHERS, Cartersville, Ga.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will 2 p.m. Thursday in Gove County Cemetery, Gove.

SCOTT --- Alice Scott (Alice Viola STEELE SCOTT)

Alice Viola, daughter of Katie and Philip STEELE, was born 17 Oct 1881 in Swanton, Saline Co, NE. She married Theodore Franklin SCOTT at Fairbury, NE, on 23 Oct 1896. They farmed in that vicinity for three years. In Dec of 1899, Alice, accompanied by her father and two sons, Vernon and Cloyd, came by train to Grinnell, KS, where they were met by her husband who had come on ahead by covered wagon. Seven miles southwest of Gove they took the last homestead in Gove Co where they lived for the next 44 or 45 years.
Pioneers are intrepid folk, but the times were filled with hardship and hard labor, with seedtime and harvest--and sometimes with seedtime and no harvest, with natural calamities and personal grief. But not all was bleak and difficult. Close by was her sister Celia who had married her husband's brother, Sam. And they bore each other's burdens and shared each other's woes--and joys, especially the joys attendant at the birth of the babies. It soon became a family joke that whenever one of the sisters had a baby the other was not far behind until at last each had nine children. Alice was "Mom" to Vernon and Cloyd and Charley and Ruth and Theodore and Boyd and Marie and Lola and Bernice.

In these years of love and laughter, she was active in the Pleasant Valley community where she joined the Church of The Nazarene, and served many years as Sunday School Superintendent. Her faith was characterized by gladness, in full realization of St. Paul's hope for Christians that they would "be filled with all joy and peace in believing" (Romans 15:13.) She would have agreed with John Wesley that sour religion is the devil's religion.

She loved to sing and she loved to pray, and years later her neighbors would still be telling how she filled the warm air of a midsummer's night with the melody of old gospel songs which she played, if by ear also with enthusiasm, on her piano. She served on the Pleasant Valley School Board because, said the patrons, if she was going to do the work for her Board member husband, she might as well be on it, too. The local Friendship Club was organized for just that, friendship, and in many a quilt the love and thoughtfulness and tender care of Alice Scott lives on.

About 1944 or 1945 she and her husband removed to Gove where in 1953 she joined The Methodist Church, and was active in the Woman's Society of Christian Service. In 1959, together with her husband, she moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Ellsworth, KS. Here her husband died 29 Jan 1960, but not before they had celebrated their 50th and their 60th wedding anniversaries. In fact, they lived together for over 63 years. It was in Ellsworth Hospital that she died, full of years, the last of her family, on 7 Mar 1965 at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 18 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; a son, Vernon, who died in 1922; and a daughter, Ruth (Mrs. Howard MCDONALD), who died in Aug 1948. She is survived by seven children: Cloyd of Ellsworth, KS; Charley of Oakley, KS; Theodore of Oroville, CA; Boyd of Brighton, CO; Marie (Mrs. Phil ROYER) of Seattle, WA; Lola (Mrs. Raymond LEWIS) of Healy, KS; and Bernice (Mrs. Herbert JACOB) of Tacoma, WA; 21 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Celia Ellen STEELE was born near Swanton, NE, 27 Jan 1877 and departed this life at her home northwest of Scott City, 21 Sep 1935, at the age of 58 years, 8 months and 24 days. She was united in marriage to Samuel T. SCOTT, 28 Mar 1893, and they made their home in Jefferson Co, NE. To this union 9 children were born; two of who precede their mother in death; George M., who gave his life for his country overseas during the World War, and Ernest A., who died from appendicitis. The other children were all at their mother's bedside during the last week of her life, while they gladly administered to her every need.

Mrs. SCOTT with her husband and two small sons, pioneered from NE to Gove City, KS in 1899 where they made their home for 22 years and where the other children were born. In 1922 the family moved to Logan Co where they lived until 1928, when they moved to Scott Co.

At the age of 16, Mrs. SCOTT united with the M. E. Church at Swanton and has lived a beautiful Christian life ever since. She was a faithful wife, a devoted mother and a loving neighbor. During here many years of poor health, she was never known to complain, and in the last months of her life when doctors, family nor friends could do nothing to relieve her suffering, she remained the same cheerful, patient woman we had known and loved so long. Two days before her death she bid her family all farewell, telling them not to grieve too much for she said, "Every thing looks so beautiful beyond." Her oldest grandchild, Alta SCOTT, had cared for her constantly for the past 3 years.

The deceased leaves to mourn her going, her husband, S. T. SCOTT, three daughters, Mrs. Hazel RHINE of Grainfield, Mrs. Vergie ABELL of Orion, and Mrs. Susan TUCKER of Scott City; four sons, Orie of Gove, Chester, Eldon and Alva of Scott City; one sister, Mrs. Alice SCOTT of Gove; 4 brothers, Emery, Cloyd, Frank and Charles; 24 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends unnumbered.

Died.--At the home of her son, Samuel SCOTT, and family, 8 miles southwest of town (Gove City), on Mon, 1 Apr 1907, Mrs. Elizabeth J. SCOTT, wife of Robert SCOTT, Sr., aged 69 years and 15 days. The funeral services were conducted from the house by Rev. W. C. Jordan. Interment was made in the Gove Cemetery, Tues afternoon. Deceased was born in Adams Co, OH, 16 Mar 1838, and was married to Robert SCOTT, 12 Oct 1854, in the same county. One year later she and her husband came west and located in Nemaha Co, NE, and there resided until 1870. From there they moved to Saline Co, NE, thence to Jefferson Co, NE, residing in the two last name counties up to eight years ago (1899), at which time they came to Gove Co and located on a claim about 6 miles west and 2 1/2 miles south of Gove City, where they have since resided.

For more that 53 years, Mr. and Mrs. SCOTT have sailed the sea of matrimony and a kinder, more affectionate or sedate couple would be hard to find. To them have been born 14 children--6 boys and 8 girls. One son and one daughter preceded her and 12 survive the deceased. In childhood Mrs. SCOTT became converted to Methodism, joining the Methodist Church.

Robert Allen SCOTT was born 25 Mar 1831, in Adams Co, OH. On 12 Oct 1854, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth J. BOWERS, of Adams Co, OH. To this union were born 14 children, 6 sons and 8 daughters, of whom the wife and mother and 5 children have preceded him to that bourne from whence no traveler ever returns.

In 1855, he moved to Nemaha Co, NE, later he moved to Saline and thence to Jefferson Co, NE. In 1899, he came to Gove Co, KS, where he continued to live until 5 Feb 1913 when his spirit took its flight to be with wife, children and loved ones who had preceded him to that land of eternal rest. Father Scott had professed the love and belief in our Savior, and his mortal life ended in the blessed assurance that all who come humbly to Him shall wear a crown of immortal glory.

Sam SCOTT, 86, died at the Scott City hospital Tue of this week after an illness of only a few days. He was a brother of Frank SCOTT of Gove. He was a long-time resident of Gove Co, moving here in 1899 from Jefferson Co, NE, before moving to Logan Co some years ago, then to Scott Co. He had many friends in all three counties who will mourn his passing.

There were funeral services at the Methodist Church in Scott at 10 o'clock this morning, 2 Oct 1952, and at Gove Methodist church at 2:30 this afternoon. Clergymen will be Rev. Livengood of Scott City and Rev. Harrold Burt of Gove. Welmann Funeral home of Scott are arranging details.
Sam is survived by seven children, their mother having passed away some years ago. The children are: Chester of Scott City; O.C. of Oakley; Eldon of Winona; Alva of Scott City; Mrs. Clarence TUCKER (Susie) of Scott City; Mrs. Vernon RHINE (Hazel) Sterling, CO; Mrs. Jean ABELL (Vergie), Oakley. Two children--Ernest and George--are deceased.

Sam was kind to all, a good husband and father, and a helpful neighbor. We'll miss him.

SCOTT --- Theodore Franklin SCOTT (Frank SCOTT)

Theodore Franklin, son of Robert A. and Eliza Jane SCOTT, was born 20 Feb 1874 in Saline Co, NE, and departed this life 29 Jan 1960 at Ellsworth, KS, at the age of 85 yrs., 11 mon. and 9 days.

On 23 Oct 1896 he was united in marriage to Alice Viola STEELE at Fairbury, NE. To this union were born nine children. Vernon Allen and Ruth Ina (Mrs. Howard MCDONALD) preceded him in death; Cloyd of Ellsworth, KS; Charley of Oakley, KS; Theodore of Topeka, KS; Boyd of Saratoga, WY; Marie (Mrs. P. C. ROYER) of Seattle, WA; Lola (Mrs. F. R. LEWIS) of Healy, KS; Bernice (Mrs. Herbert JACOB) of Frankfurt, Germany.

In 1900 father and mother and two boys moved to a homestead 7 miles southwest of Gove where he was engaged in farming and cattle raising. He served many years on the township and school boards in the Pleasant Valley district and was a member of the Gove Methodist Church.

In 1945 Frank and his wife Alice moved to Gove and resided there until they entered the Good Samaritan Home at Ellsworth, KS. Mr. and Mrs. SCOTT observed their 63rd wedding anniversary in Oct of 1959.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; 7 children, Cloyd, Charley, Theodore, Boyd, Marie, Lola, Bernice; 2 brothers, John of Paola, KS and Cy of Albuquerque, NM; a host of other relatives and many friends.

SITES --- Albert SITES
Grinnell Record-Leader, #42, Thursday, January 8, 1948
Albert SITES, age 90, of Grinnell, passed away in the Quinter hospital Sunday morning, following a several day severe illness. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church in Grinnell Wednesday afternoon.

Mr. SITES came to Gove county in 1909 and settled on a farm south of Grinnell where he has since resided. During the past several years, he has resided on this farm with his son Russell SITES and family.

Mr. SITES had enjoyed fair health until recently and only last fall was able to participate in several celebrations honoring his ninetieth birthday anniversary, which occurred on Sept. 30, 1947. The winter before, he was able to make a trip by airplane to California where he visited relatives.

Surviving relatives are his children, Russell SITES of Grinnell; Carl SITES of Los Angeles, Calif.; Ruhl SITES of San Clemente, Calif.; W.A. SITES of Colby; Floyd SITES of Manhattan; Mrs. Gertrude McMASTER of Pittsburgh, Pa.; his sisters, Mrs. Minnie HARRIS of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Mrs. Kathryn SITES of Warren, Ind.; and one brother, J.B. SITES of Oceanside, Calif., in the immediate family.

Joe SUITER, Sr., is Dead
A message came to Phil SUITER that his brother Joe had passed away at Wichita, KS, Mon (19 Feb 1940) of this week. Funeral services were at Wichita at 10:30 yesterday (Wed) morning.

Joseph Louis SUITER, who was a little more than 77 years of age when he died (born 2 Jan 1863); was married to Josephine SCOTT (Frank SCOTT's sister) 4 Mar 1886 in Jefferson Co, NE. To this union were born eight children, five of whom are living: Mrs. Pearl CODY, Josie, and Cy SUITER of Wichita; Mrs. Herb WILLIAMS and Joe SUITER of Idaho.

The family came to Gove Co in the early 1900's and resided here until about nine years ago when they moved to Wichita.

Joe had many friends here who will be sorry to learn of his death.

Odus SUITER Obituary
Odus Josephine SCOTT was born 31 Dec 1863 at Nemaha, NE, and departed this life on 14 May 1956, at the home of her daughter Mrs. E. J. CODY of 1333 South Richmond, Wichita, KS. She was united in marriage to Joseph L. SUITER 4 Mar 1886. Her husband preceded her in death in Feb 1940.

To this union were born 8 children, three sons and five daughters. Three daughters and one son have passed on to their reward, leaving to mourn her passing two sons and two daughters, namely, Mrs. Pearl CODY and Cy SUITER of Wichita, KS, Mrs. H. H. WILLIAMS of Phoenix, AZ, and J. W. SUITER Roseburg, OR.

She is survived by: 41 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren, 25 great- great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert SCOTT, Los Angeles, CA; Frank SCOTT, Gove, KS; Cy Scott, Albuquerque, NM and a host of friends and relatives.

She was a member of the Pilgrim Holiness Church for many years and had a never wavering testimony, always testifying to any and all, as to what God had done for her in saving and sanctifying her soul.

She was a resident of KS for 56 years, having come to Gove Co from NE in 1900. She moved to Wichita in 1932.

She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Obituary--Mrs. Phil SUITER. Susan Catherine SCOTT was born 3 Oct, 1855, at Brownville, NE, and died at her home at Gove, KS, 9 Dec, 1931, aged 76 years, 2 months, and 6 days. She grew to womanhood in her home state. She was married to George B. WRIGHTER 6 Feb 1879. In 1894 she, her husband and three children moved onto a farm near Gove, KS. Here they lived about ten years, after which they moved to Grainfield, KS.
After her husband's death she made her home with her daughters, Mrs. Bertha PECK and Mrs. Mary LITTON. On 30 Apr 1924, she was married to Philip SUITER. They made their home south of Grainfield until they moved to Gove last January.

She leaves a husband, two daughters--Mrs. Bertha PECK and Mrs. Mary LITTON--one son, Floyd WRIGHTER, 7 grandchildren, one great grandchild, 3 sisters, 5 brothers and many friends and other relatives to mourn her loss.

She was a devoted mother, loving wife and a kind and thoughtful grandmother. She became a member of the Methodist church in early womanhood. She kept her faith in her Redeemer and knew that she would have a home in heaven.

Sarah Jane (Jennie) HOCKERSMITH was born to John M. and Margaret E. HOCKERSMITH near Canton, McPherson County, KS, 10 Apr 1886 and departed this life at Florence, KS, 26 Jan 1938 at the age of 51 years, 9 months and 16 days.

She moved with her parents at the age of 1 month to Gove county, KS, where she spent the greater part of her life.

On 21 Dec 1904 she was united in marriage to Emil T. LEWIS. Unto this union were born three daughters and four sons, two children preceded her death in infancy.

On 18 Dec 1930, she was united in marriage to Roy VAN MARTER, of Grinnell, KS. In April 1935 they came to Florence, KS, where they have since made their home.

She leaves to mourn her departing, her husband, Roy VAN MARTER; three sons, Theodore and Glenn LEWIS, of Midvale, UT; Curtis LEWIS, of Uravan, CO; two daughters, Mrs. Paul MORRIS and Nellie LEWIS, of Florence, KS; three sisters, Mrs. Nora EVANS, of Gove, KS, Mrs. Rena THOMAS, of Colby, KS and Mrs. Retta LANDRUS, of Blanchard, ID; one brother Chris HOCKERSMITH, of Gove, KS; two grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

In her girlhood she united in membership with the Methodist Church at Gove, KS. She was a kind and loving wife and mother and always willing to help wherever she was needed.

Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon from the Methodist Church with the Rev. J. E. Robinson, pastor, in charge. Mesdames Robinson and Jackson, and Messrs. Utz and Rector sang three selections. Mrs. Faye Bidwell was the pianist. Burial was made in Hillcrest cemetery.

Obituary--Geo. B. WRIGHTER. George B. WRIGHTER was born in Pennsylvania 19 Sep 1856; died in Grainfield, KS, 11 Mar 1914, at the age of 57 years, 5 months and 22 days.
Mr. WRIGHTER was united in marriage to Catherine S. SCOTT, 6 Feb 1879. To this union were born four children, Mary D. LITTON, Bertha G. PECK, S. Floyd WRIGHTER, and Ruth WRIGHTER, deceased. He left to mourn his departure an aged mother, a wife, two sisters, three children and four grandchildren. Mrs. D. W. LITTON, a sister, of Gove, KS, and Mrs. Jink DAVIS, of Washington; two sisters having preceded him.

Mr. WRIGHTER united with the Methodist church at Orion, KS, through the ministry of Brother SCOTT, and since living in Grainfield attended the Sunday School and church services at the Congregational church. The deceased has resided in Gove Co for more than 25 years, has always lived a consistent life, and was a good father and husband.

He passed away peacefully, full of hope and confidence, in the promise of his Redeemer. His memory will be cherished by his mother, wife and children until that day when they all shall meet him in the realms of the great Beyond.

WRIGHTER --- Marvin O.

Marvin O. WRIGHTER, son of Stephan and Louisa BROWN WRIGHTER was born April 15, 1836 Susquehana, Pennsylvania. He died July 12, 1904 Gove County, Kansas.
Marvin was a soldier during the Civil War. He immigrated to Jefferson County, Nebraska and then to Gove County, Kansas.
Marvin married Mercy DANN July 4, 1855 Binghamton, New York. Five children were born to this union, George, Delferna, Nancy, Viola (Mrs. William Day LITTON) and Olive ( Mrs. J.J. BURRIS).
Marvin is buried at the Gove County Cemetery.

Do you have an old obituary or short death notice of a Gove County resident tucked away in a scrapbook, trunk or file. Take it out and share it with the rest of us! Type up your obituary and email it to us and we'll post it here. Just observe the following guidelines...
To enter your Gove County obituaries:

1- Email them to me at lynwolf@st-tel.net. Put GOVE CO OBITUARY in your subject line.
2- On first line put name of deceased. Use the name in the obit. If you want to rename the individual to clarify who they are add that name in parenthesis after the obit name. Look below for examples of this. Do this to include maiden names or full names for individuals given initials only in the obit.
3-On the second line put the name of the newspaper, newspaper's town, date of issue where obituary is found, page, column, if known. PLEASE.... Gove County residents only... A resident is defined here as an individual who lived in Gove County for part of his/her life.
4-Type out the obituary capitalizing all SURNAMES. Don't put given names or locations all in caps, just the surnames. Now here's the hard part. Limit your obituary to less than 350 words. This may be hard. Some obituaries go on and on. Figure out what to keep... what to drop. If we get something too long we'll have to send it back to you for editing.
5-Put "submitted by [your name and email address]" at the end. If you want to, include your postal address as well.

6- It's ok to edit the obits you submit. If you want to add maiden names, correct/add dates or other information do so. Just put any added information in [brackets]. That lets the reader know that this is something not in the original obituary. Just remember to keep the whole thing under 350 words.
