Custer County Chief, Broken Bow, Nebraska, Febr. 1, 1994
Mr. LAWLIS , 90, died Jan 29, 1994, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home. He was born April 27, 1903, at Hill City, KS, son of James T. LAWLIS and Ida GARNETT LAWLIS and grew up in Graham County, KS and Gentry, AR. He farmed in Kansas and then homesteaded in the Peace River County, Alberta, Canada. He also worked in Montana, British Columbia, and Nebraska before his marriage to Freda [Mary] TATE , on April 19, 1930. They lived on the TATE Ranch where he raised Hereford cattle. Mr. LAWLIS was one of the first brand inspectors in the state. In 1952, they moved to the Broken Bow area. They farmed east of town until retirement and moved into Broken Bow in 1979. Mr. LAWLIS was a charter member of the Sandhills Cattle Ass'n, and a member of the Broken Bow Elks Lodge.
Survivors include three daughters, Vicki [Richard] TROXEL, Roberta [Hugh] SHERMAN, and Mary DANIELS, a brother, Don of Buckley, and sister: Opal JASSMAN,17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Preceeding him in death were his wife in 1982, four brothers [Robert, Ivan, Walter, and Lauren] , three sisters [Goldia WOOTEN, Velma, Dora DAILY, ], and three great-grandchildren. [ He was also preceeded in death by a half-brother, Reuben A. LAWLIS, and a half sister, Mary Ethel FOLLETT]
